SG is very important. Both Preisdent of Health science and as chancellor, SG voice is always very important in deliberations. All about students. Halls inspire you to do very best. The sacrifice for those who support you is also very important. Speaking from the heart tonight. Hard to believe 6 year tenure is coming to end. Handing keys to Adm. McRaven. Amazing how time goes by. In order to excel in administration, you have to set priorities. System is so large. Has my tenure made the system better? Brought together presidents of all campuses together to add value to UT. 5 themes- All the campuses are very different. Everyone agreed that we need to position UT Austin as the finest public institution in the nation. Needed to improve the health of texas. UT Austin/TAMU can’t be the only 2 research intensive public schools in the state. Need the others to become AAU universities. Plant a larger goals in south texas. Underserved area. Become leader in energy and engineering. Well, what did we do?- In order for UT Austin to succeed, needed a school of medicine. Key ingredient. Facilities of Cockrell school of engineering were diminishing- risked losing competitive edge. Got board of regents to make long term commitment to school of medicine- $25 mil perpetuity + $5 mil faculty recruitment. Didn’t expect tuition bonds to fail- board needed to support Powers. Need data and facts. In order to meet demands, we need addl 9000 engineers for the next few years. Board unanimously approved. Utilized reports as means of getting legislature to support South Texas medical school efforts. Have improved health of Texas. Have to support all schools- instill competitive spirit between institutions. Board matched philanthropic gifts. Plant large flag in ST- divorce between UT Brownsville and local community college. Panhandle/Brownsville not eligible for permanent university funds. Need to execute our visions. After 3-4 hours of deliberation, parliamentarian says to create new university. Combine universities under 1 umbrella and get 2/3 approval from Legsilature. Able to get legislature to get united on this front and voted unanimously. Educate more engineers. Establish energy research group in Houston. I’d like to step down when you find a recruitment. Will be director of pediatric transplant center in San Antonio. Bystanders, enhance safety, great place to teach and do research. Keep tuition below CPI. Q/Patrick- what focuses will set apart Dell from other medical schools across state? Starting from scratch- when I walk into this room, what is the physiological response? Learn vision, hearing, brain synthesis, pathologyinterdisciplinary. First med school built at existing AAU in 7 decades. Can take courses at other colleges at UT Austin. Be great leaders in academic medicine. Austin zone of innovation. Q/Cavazos- thanks for ST initiatives. What do you see for UT RGB in future? Hope all enhance aspirations. Aim high, raise the bar. Recruit great faculty. Dean of medical school is having a ball with all efforts. Energized a community. Q/Rosales- UT Austin focal point. How do we bring student talent to level of Ivy league? Want a diverse student body. Faculty needs diversification too. Inadequate when you look at level of deans/presidents. Want kids to pursue careers in education administration. Q/Nalley- What are McRaven’s greatest challenges? He’s got a full glass- needs to work with Legislature. Rebuild bridges. Gets to find Bill Powers’ successor. Build on great things he did. Beautiful challenges. Q/Sacks- expansion of research beyond UT Austin? About scholarly contributions AND education. Want frontline research. Emerging universities. Support campuses that don’t get lots of state supportboard has to allocate funds as their lifeline. Open Forum a. Marsha Reardon- new to UT and Austin. Student Philanthropy Coordinator and Special Campaigns. Thanks Day November 6th. Will have cool things for you. Get involved in social media. 10-2 at Gregory Plaza. If UT Austin relied on tuition only, it wouldn’t last past November. You’ll get a t-shirt if you’re an ambassador. Leaving handouts for you. Shoot me an email or call. b. Max Williams- SComm is bad. Lee Leffigwell message- lots are deported because of political problems. Most deported are not violent criminals. Unnecessarily reduces revenue. c. Brandon Lonn- Latino Jewish Coalition- speaking about SComm. If you look back at your family lineage, your family was probably a stranger in a foreign land. Provided opportunity and safety. It doesn’t practically help either. Secure community undermines trust between police and immigrant community. If I withdrew from campus because of mono, would have lost status as citizen and been deported. Meant that they couldn’t visit me either. Surrounded by supporters at UT. Affects all of us. Need goals and initiatives, and want to follow up on these. Judicial Report Unfinished Business New Business a. AR 22- In Opposition to Participation in the “Secure Communities” (S-Comm) Program and Compliance with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detainers i. Program run by ICE. Local police officers can pull people over for minor offense and authority to put them in local jail and detain them for 48 hours- 4th amendment probable cause. Overwhelmingly failed in Travis County. 82% reporting are nonviolent. Voting to defund it later this month. Voice student opinion. Make sure that we represent students who can be affected by this. Matter that affects those at UT. Q/Barth- Bring this closer to students? For all language issues so we can sit down and solve it, vote y/n after we’ve talked about all this. Q/Barth- who drew the legal conclusions? Court of NW US circuit. One includes a UT law professor interpreting SComm. Q/Crane- Ut Board Rules/Reg- Member Max Patterson can’t put to vote by attaching title. Also, not directly University-related issue. Requires “not opinion of UT” statement. Instilling of fears on this campus because many aren’t willing to come forward. Focusing on working on issues- intent of ensuring student representation. Students are terrified of committing minor violations that can cause deportation to faraway countries. If we’re not the voice of students, who is. First Whereas, voice of students in assembly are not the beliefs of the system. Not putting an end to this legislation- point of order- structurally wrong with legislation. Commissioner’s court- would push it afterwards- would we be able to talk about before committee. Speaker- will consider fast track at later date. Point of order has been removed. Q/Vaughn- approx. how many are affected on UT campus? Demographic/age based breakdown. Have not been able to find that data because not all coming forward. Need to take action because of magnitude. Q/Vaughn- was Obama specifically talking about Scomm? No, he was talking about comprehensive immigration reform. Large population of undocumented students. Quite large effects here on campus. Don’t want others to know they are undocumented. SG has interest in representing this. Q/Long- will it be CIR or Scomm or both? We as authors want it to represent a stance against all. Commend to committee. b. AR 23- In Support of the Core Values of UT Football Coach Charlie Strong i. Introduced Pavil Patel- involve folks who aren’t in SG. Roger Goodell even came to talk about 5 core values- honesty, no stealing, no weapons, treat women with respect and no drugs. Even those who he’s suspended- makes sure they’re ok afterwards. Meets with families and teachers. Testament to respect and love of players. Commit to committee. Budget amendment- state relaations didn’t need the money, so transferred to special projects. Suspended rules and move $500 to Special Projects. Passes. XVI. Try to make committee meetings. Committee chairs. Full authority to chairs. Not my job to be oversight. Can always come to me.
