Phrase /Clause
• A clause has a subject and a verb
• A phrase doesn’t.
Clauses/Phrases
Copy each of the following examples and determine
whether the underlined words are a clause or a phrase. If
the underlined portion is a clause, underline the subject
once and the predicate twice.

• A simple sentence has one independent clause

comes first there is a comma. If the
dependent clause is last= no comma)
• A Compound/ complex sentence has two
independent clauses and a dependent clause
