Week’s objectives:

Students will correctly identify (read) and write note durations in 4/4 meter including whole
notes, half notes, quarter notes, triplet notes, and 8th notes along with corresponding rests.
Students will correctly play & sing various rhythmic patterns containing duration notes listed
above.
Students will define the following musical terms and will use the terms in a sentence:
Overture, March, triplet, ballet, waltz.
Students will define and use the terms: Overture, suite, celeste, harp, marcato, staccato
Students will describe musical characteristics such as texture, staccato, legato, allegro,
moderato, largo, melody, harmony, rhythm, pitch, tempo, and dynamics.
Students will describe, clap, sing, and notate rhythms in ¾ meter
Students will identify and describe characteristics of the harp and it’s sound/tone.
Students will learn dance steps to the waltz and will dance the waltz with the music “Waltz
of the Flowers.”
Students will listen to, watch, and analyze the “Dance of the Reed Flutes” from the
Nutcracker Suite, discussing form, tempo, instrumentation, and texture.
Students will create movement to illustrate the different melodic themes of the “Chinese
Dance” from the Nutcracker Suite.
Students will map the areas of the world that each dance in the Nutcracker Suite represents.
Students will aurally identify each movement of the Nutcracker Suite by taking a listening
quiz.
Activities to assist in achieving the objectives:
1.
Rhythm practice
a. Rhythmic movement with streamers – Chinese Dance
i. Illustrate woodwind sounds vs. low strings
ii. Show the tempo and meter of the dance with ribbon
2. Analyze the form and instrumentation of the “Dance of the Reed Flutes”
a. Sing parody lyrics to this movement to help remember the melodies
b. Watch the ballet dance to this movement
3. Waltz of the Flowers
a. Discuss and practice clapping and writing rhythms in ¾ meter
b. Learn and practice dance steps for the waltz
c. Watch and evaluate the ballet movement to this movement
4. Final exam for “Nutcracker Suite”
a. Students will take a listening exam, identifying which movements of the Nutcracker
Suite they are hearing.
b. Students will take a vocabulary quiz on the terms defined in this unit, and will write how
each word can be used in other contexts in our world.
i. Vocabulary terms – ballet, overture, waltz, harp, celeste, march, legato, staccato
