• These tests will focus on LISTENING and material learned through readings,
discussions, worksheets, etc.. Students will be given a variety of listening
examples. For each example they may be asked to identify the artist, song, genre,
instrumentation and other basic elements of music. There will also be a written
portion in which the students will be expected to discuss the cultural, political or
societal importance of specific songs and/or artists. More instructions will be
given with any provided Study Guides. Other parts will combine elements found
in the quizzes, discussion posts, assignments and previous tests. The format will
be a variety of multiple choice, T/F, short answer and short essay. More
information will be given provided as we approach the test dates.
Discussions:
Each discussion will have independent grade rubrics that will be delivered with
the instructions. Please read through them carefully to receive full credit. Discussions
will allow the students opportunity to discuss the political, cultural and societal
importance of the music and artists covered in class. These will prepare students for the
short essay portion of the Face-to-Face exams and online quizzes.
General guidelines for ALL DISCUSSIONS:
• Adhere to the posted due dates.
• Follow Netiquette policies posted in Important Documents and Information.
• Read and follow all instructions for each separate discussion thread
• Comment on your classmates’ posts
**NOTE: All posts will be monitored by the instructor and may be removed for
inappropriate comments, behavior or topics.
Quizzes:
Quizzes will be administered in an online format (the first quiz is the Online
Student Contract). The quiz dates can be found in the Assignment Schedule. Quizzes will
generally contain multiple choice, T/F and short answer questions that will assess the
student’s general knowledge of facts, terms and music covered in the class. The quizzes
will prepare students for future exams. There will be NO make-ups allowed for missed
quizzes.
Participation/Attendance:
Your participation in the course is imperative for success. Failure to log into the
course by 5pm June 30 will result in an automatic withdraw from class. Students are
expected to log into the course and monitor their messages, discussion posts and daily
assignments at least 4 times a week between June 29 and the last day of class (July23).
You will be expected to complete appx. 10 hours of work each week. The days you log in
is up to you, but I recommend logging in throughout the weekdays to make sure you
know all information and assignments Failure to do so will likely cause you to miss an
assignment and therefore, negatively affect your final grade.
Please remember that CourseDen weekly maintenance takes place on the
weekends. You can find the maintenance schedule by clicking on the Maintenance link
at the top right of your CourseDen Home page.
Concert Review
Students will submit a 500-600 word concert review by midnight, Wednesday,
July 22 in which they will discuss the performance, performers and venue and other
music elements. Students may choose to attend and review a live show OR watch an
online performance (live/streaming or recorded). This paper will serve as an opportunity
to review and critique live music similar to music covered in class. Additionally, this
paper will serve as a chance for students to use the music knowledge gained in this
course in a “real-life” setting. The group(s) performing must fall into Jazz, Rock or Pop
music categories (art music and orchestral/symphonic concerts will not count). Reading
concert reviews as part of the READ assignments, and writing reviews of music from the
listening list in the discussion thread will prepare students for this paper.
Live Performance Guidelines:
• Must ask and gain approval for the event AT LEAST 24 hours in advance
• Must attend for at least 1 full hour
• Must provide proof of attendance within 2 days of attending the event or by 7pm July
22, whichever is first.
• Photo of you at event accompanied by a ticket, brochure or flier is the best option.
• Photo and a copy or picture of the event ticket, brochure, etc. should be uploaded in
their Dropbox
Online Performance Guidelines:
• Must ask and gain approval for online performance AT LEAST 24 hours in advance
◦ You MUST be able to WATCH video of the performance. Audio streaming
will not count.
◦ YouTube performances are acceptable IF approved in advance.
• Must watch at least 1 hour of online performances
◦ Since it may be difficult to watch one group or performance for an hour
in an online setting due to streaming issues, video length, etc., it is
important that you talk with the instructor about how you will fulfill the 1
hour time requirement. You may need to observe multiple performances.
• Must provide the full web address(es) and access time and date.
• The hour of observation should be done in one setting, even if multiple
performances/websites are used.
• For a list of websites to consider, review the Resources handout and do an
independent search for streaming music, radio stations that host and stream live
artists, and video of festivals and concerts
