Interested EMT Applicant,
This letter will outline the requirements for the EMT Basic course. Please read it carefully as there are important
details found within the letter. Questions not answered within this letter should be directed towards Gary Madison
for the EMT Training program. Contact information can be found at the end of this letter.
The Lead Instructor for the EMT-Basic course will be Gary Madison. The course will be conducted in Bowling
Green. The class will follow the Latest National Standard Curriculum. The course will be conducted by Medical
Center EMS Training and will be following rules and regulations of The Medical Center at Bowling Green, and the
Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services.
SCHEDULE:
The course is on a semester schedule: example fall semester class will begin the second week of in August and
finish in December and the Spring course will begin the first week of in January and finish in May. The weeknight
classes scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday nights will start at 6:00pm and end at 10:00pm. The Saturday classes
will be 4-6 hours in duration and begin at 8:00am with a 30-minute dinner break about noon. There will be at least
two Saturday classes in the fall class and one in the spring class. You will also be required to do EMS observation
time at an Emergency Medical Service. There will also be an online portion of the class that has to be completed
before class. You must have access to the internet to complete this.
PASS / FAIL CRITERIA:
The EMT student will need to score an average of 75% on the written examinations throughout the class. There will
be 5-6 written examinations consisting of 100-150 questions each. EMT Students MUST achieve an average of 75%
on the written exams throughout the course. Failure of more than 2 exams during the course will be grounds for
dismissal from the course. You must also complete the online portion assigned before each class session, You will
not be allowed to take the final test unless this is complete. There will be a final written test that is pass-fail that you
must score 75% or above. The EMT student will not be allowed to miss more than one night this during the course.
Skill competencies will be evaluated throughout the course as well as completion of homework and work ethics.
Further explanation of the grading scale will be presented on the first night of the course.
CREDIT FOR THE COURSE:
After passing both the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians practical skills and the computer based
testing the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services will award certification as a Kentucky EMT. The
National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians will provide registration as a Nationally registered EMT
Basic. There is a Pearson Vue Testing center located in Bowling Green at the Kentucky Advanced Technical
Institute. There are other testing centers in Kentucky, Tennessee and located throughout the United States.
COST OF THE COURSE:
The tuition for fall 2014*** will be $675.00. Each student will be provided a textbook and an access code to the
online portion of the class. If the student desires a workbook they will be available for purchase at the beginning of
class. Each student will be provided with the following piece of medical equipment: Pocket mask, Skill Sheets,
Ride time site with medical clearance.
The Board of EMS now requires a background check, The cost is $48.00. which is the responsibility of the student.
Medical Center EMS will obtain a background check before you start your EMS ride time.
(The cost is evaluated after each class and adjusted as appropriate.)
At the end of the course, there will be additional fees related to Certifications from both the
NREMT and the KBEMS. Those fees will be approximately $178.00 (see below). The
student is responsible for these fees.
The breakdown of these fees is as follows:
Certification fee - $40.00 (KBEMS)
Examination fee - $40.00
NREMT Exam - $70.00 (NREMT)
Due the final night of class
Due the day of the NREMT practical testing (the last day of class)
Payable directly to the national registry online when scheduling
your NREMT computer based exam.
Background Fee - 48.00
Payable to Through KBEMS website.
(Medical Center EMS has no control over these costs and they may change at any time.)
REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION:
Requirements for certification are set forth in 202 KAR 7:301.
Each applicant shall:
- understand, read, speak and write the English language with a comprehension and performance level
equal to at least the ninth grade of education
- not currently be subject to disciplinary action pursuant to KRS 311A that would prevent certification
- hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or learners permit
- be at least 18 years of age
- hold a high school diploma or GED (at the time of certification)
- obtain NREMT registration as a NREMT-B within 2 years of completion of the course
- Complete the “Emergency Medical Technician Initial Certification Application” online at KBEMS.
- Present written evidence of completion of current HIV/AIDS training required by KRS 311A.110**
- Complete an approved Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma class.**
- Present an approved CPR class. (Included with class with cost of card.)
