graduate from the Yale New Haven Sponsor Hospital Program.
Certification Process
National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification requires successful
completion of both a cognitive and psychomotor exam. Passed portions of the exam (both
cognitive and psychomotor) remain valid for a twelve (12) month period.
Cognitive (Written Exam)
The NREMT Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) cognitive exam is a computer
adaptive test (CAT). The number of items a candidate can expect on the Emergency
Medical Technician (EMT) exam will range from 70 to 120. The maximum amount of
time given to complete the exam is 2 hours.
The exam will cover the entire spectrum of EMS care including: Airway, Respiration &
Ventilation; Cardiology & Resuscitation; Trauma; Medical & Obstetrics/Gynecology;
and EMS Operations. Items related to patient care are focused on adult and geriatric
patients (85%) and pediatric patients (15%). In order to pass the exam, you must meet a
standard level of competency. The passing standard is defined by the ability to provide
safe and effective entry level emergency medical care.
In the event you are unsuccessful passing the cognitive exam; the NREMT will provide
feedback on your performance. You may apply to retest 15 days after your last
examination.
Candidates are given six opportunities to pass the cognitive examination provided all
other requirements for National EMS Certification are met. After three attempts,
candidates must submit official documentation verifying completion of 24 hours of
remedial training. The candidate is given three additional attempts to pass, provided all
other requirements for National Certification are met. Candidates who fail to pass after a
total of six attempts are required to repeat the entire Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT) course.

Psychomotor (Practical Exam)
Throughout your Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) educational program you must
demonstrate competence in a wide range of emergency care skills. Your instructor must
attest that you have demonstrated competence in the following skills during your course:
patient assessment/management of a trauma patient, patient assessment/management of a
medical patient, cardiac arrest management/AED, bag-valve-mask ventilation of an
apneic patient, spinal immobilization (both seated and supine patient), long bone fracture
immobilization, joint dislocation immobilization, traction splinting, bleeding
control/shock management, upper airway adjuncts and suction, mouth-to-mouth
ventilation with supplemental oxygen, and supplemental oxygen administration to a
breathing patient.
You must also successfully complete a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT) psychomotor examination. Speak with your instructor or State EMS Office about
the format and logistics of completing a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT) psychomotor exam.

You must register for the CT State Practical Exam through that affiliated agency or
department. We are not currently offering the practical exam at YNHSHP.

ACKER as your Coordinator when you take the Practical Exam.

Expiration Dates
Initial expiration dates are determined by the date of successful completion of the entire
national certification process. Individuals successfully completing the national
certification process between the dates of January 1 - June 30 will receive an expiration
date of March 31 two years in the future. Individuals successfully completing the national
certification process between July 1 and December 31 will receive an expiration date of
March 31 three years in the future.

When you arrive for your practical examination you will be asked for the name of the
Coordinator or Lead Instructor who taught your program.
In order to ensure your test results are received, please be sure to provide them with
Dave Acker’s name.

FOR
CREATING
THE
NREMT
CANDIDATE
PROFILE
Before graduating our program, you need to create a candidate profile
with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Please visit www.nremt.org to create your new account.
To begin creating account you will need to click on “Create New Account”
Create a username and password.
You will also need to provide the registry with your full name and email address.
When asked about your user role you should check the box next to the option:
Applying to become nationally certified.
You will need to complete three security questions for your account.
If your username and password are accepted a message will read:
Account Saved.
Once complete you should also receive a message that reads:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your account has been successfully saved. Once you log in, you will be able to
navigate the site. To log in, enter your username and password in the upper left
hand corner under “returning users”.
Registrant or Candidate Role:
You have been granted a Registrant/Candidate role. After you successfully login,
you will need to fill out an Account Information profile before you are able to
submit an online application.

You should then log-in to your account and complete the personal information section of
your candidate profile. This information can be found under the “Manage NREMT
Profile” located in the left margin of the page.

Your next step should be to create an Initial Entry Application by clicking on the
“Create Initial Entry App” in the left margin.
Choose “EMT” from the list of available choices for the NREMT Application Level.
You will need to check the following acknowledgement to continue your online
application, which reads:
I have read and understand the NREMT entry requirements and wish to complete
the online application.

Click “Next”
Complete the questions under the EMT-Basic / EMT Application. You will need to input
the Initial Course Completion Date.
Under “EMS Education Program” enter “Connecticut” for the location of the training
institution or agency state.
Next, click on “List of EMS Education Programs”
Look for (000647) Dave Tauber – New Haven and click on Dave Tauber’s name. This
will populate his information in the name and address fields. It should look something
like this:

At this time, you do not need to complete the Program Sections fields.
Under Registration Information you will not have anything to input.
Under CPR Credential Verification: Enter the month and year your CPR card expires.
Under Licensing Action and Felony Statement answer the yes/no questions.
Read the NREMT Disclosure Statement and click “submit” to complete your application.
Next, you need to submit a payment.
In order to do this click on the Check Initial Entry App Status located on the left side of
the webpage.
This should open a window indicating a payment has not been made. Click on the
appropriate link and make your $70.00 application payment online.
****** Please note: You will not receive your “Authorization to Test” letter until you
pay for the written exam through the NREMT Organization website.
Once you successfully complete our program, which means you have passed our final
exams and you have handed in all the required paperwork, we will submit the
information to the NREMT, which will “clear” you. After processing and review
(approximately 1 week) the NREMT will issue you a 10 digit candidate profile number
along with an Authorization to Test letter. This information is found under the Check
Initial Entry App Status. (See example below)
Click on the Print/View Authorization to Test (ATT) Letter link
You will see the message below. Click on “I understand” to continue.

Your ATT letter should look similar to the one below. Please make note of the NREMT
Candidate ID number. You will need the aforementioned number to sign-up for your
written exam on the Pearson Vue website.
After you complete the NREMT written and CT State Practical Exams you will be
issued an NREMT Registry with 4-6 weeks.
This number will be listed under your name when you login to your account. It should
read as follows:

Pearson Vue
The written exam is scheduled online through Pearson Vue.
You must have created a NREMT profile before completing the steps below!
The url address is: http://home.pearsonvue.com/test-taker.aspx
In the: Start here: Select your program box type in National Registry of Emergency
Medical Technicians (NREMT).
Reminder:
Before scheduling an examination appointment, you must have already:
1. Registered with NREMT and received an Authorization to Test letter.
2. Been notified of your eligibility to sit for the examination; and
3. Paid an examination authorization fee to NREMT.
When you receive your Authorization to Test letter, carefully review the information to
ensure it is accurate. If any of the information is incorrect, or if the information has
changed, please contact the National Registry at 614-888-4484.
Once you have created an account on Pearson Vue you will log in and should see preapproved exams listed under the “NREMT Exams” section.
Schedule the appointment that is most convenient for you.
