Students will expand cultural knowledge and learn to interpret the varied products of Spanish-speaking civilizations, such as music, films, newspapers, architecture, and inventions, in terms of underlying cultural values and attitudes. This course also probes selected Spanish-speaking writers who depict the changing face of Spanish-speaking societies and an awareness of Latin America’s own diverse cultural identity. Performance Standards: 1- Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions in Spanish. 2- Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. 3- Students present information, concepts and ideas to an audience of listeners and readers on a variety of topics. 4- Students gain more in depth knowledge and understanding of the Hispanic culture. 5- Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between products and perspectives of the Hispanic culture. 6- Students connect with other disciplines and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the Spanish language. 7- Students will use the language both within and beyond the school setting. Unit 4: Pack your bags Unit 5: When I was little Unit 6: Career ready Unit 7: Let’s volunteer! Unit 8: Our future. All of the above units shall cover the following vocabulary: world and geography terms, social relationships, arts, music, travel and transportation, memories about the past, global events, career and, community service activities. Each unit should require approximately 2-3 weeks. At the end of each unit you will have a special project and/or speaking and written assessments. The date will be announced at the beginning of the unit, please be aware this dates might change. Types of graded assessment: Learner proficiency of language and intercultural competence is measured in the classroom in a variety of ways such as: teacher observation, warm up activities, comprehension checks, exit slips, self- and peer assessments, previously announced quizzes or pop quizzes, and projects. District-developed summative assessments or Integrated Performance Assessments (IPA), will allowed learners to demonstrate three modes of communications in a cultural context. Method of Instruction and Course Materials: A variety of teaching strategies will be used through the school year: natural approach, collaborative learning, project based learning and the incorporation of technology into the classroom. Textbook: Realidades 3 (2008 Edition) Realidades 3 Practice Workbook Instructional Videos and DVD Program Newspapers, magazines, and authentic materials. Additional Resources created by the teacher Spanish-English/English –Spanish Dictionary Required Materials: Required materials: - 1 spiral notebook (Only for Spanish class) - Three ring Binder or 1 folder with pockets. - Loose leaf ruled filler paper. - Spanish & English Dictionary (at home-convenient but not mandatory) - Pens and pencils. - USB flash drive or a google drive account Student Evaluation Criteria: Your effort and hard work in the following areas will determine your final grade based on the following categories: Engagement 20% (Participation, group work, class discussion, teacher observation, and student reflection) Progression 30% Homework- 10% Class assignments and small projects- 10% Quizzes-10% Mastery 50% Performance Based Assessments and Integrated Performance Assessments- 30% Mid-Term- 10% Final Exam -10% Late assignments will end up in losing 10% of the grade per each day it is late for up to three days. After three days it will not be accepted. Late homework will not be accepted. Extra-credit will not be given as a substitute for any missing assignments. Make up work: According to school policy, students who have excused absences may request make-up work within 3 school days of your return to class. You will have the same number of school days of absence or suspension plus 1 school day from the time you receive the make-up work to turn it in. It is the responsibility of the student to request the make-up work from the teacher and to complete it in a timely manner. Missed tests or quizzes will need to be scheduled with me before or after school. Work not made up within the time limit will become a zero. Don’t forget our grades are cumulative all throughout the school year. If work is not completed in that time, the grade is recorded as a U W- (Withdrawal) Students who withdraw from school and do not complete a course are assigned a W.
