On the Moon
Vocabulary
Vocabulary word: surface
In the next few slides, you will see pictures of
different surfaces. As you look at the pictures
and read the sentences, see if you can come up
with a definition of surface.
The surface of this area of land is made of dry, cracked dirt.
Many Aloe Vera plants are growing on the surface of this land.
The surface of the water has many ripples and small waves.
Think about the pictures you just saw.

Vocabulary word: hill
In the next few slides, you will see pictures of
different hills. As you look at the pictures
and read the sentences, see if you can come up
with a definition of hill.
There are several green, grassy hills in this picture.
If you look closely you can see a few small houses at the bottom of the hills.
Part of this snow covered hill has no trees so kids can go sledding in the winter.

Vocabulary word: mountain
In the next few slides, you will see pictures of
different mountains. As you look at the pictures
and read the sentences, see if you can come up
with a definition of mountain.
Even in the summer, you will still see snow on the tops of mountains.
The clouds are very close to the peaks on these mountains in Alaska.

Here is a picture of a mountain on the moon:
The mountains are in the background of the picture but they have round, smooth tops
unlike the mountains on Earth.
Vocabulary word: valley
In the next few slides, you will see pictures of
different valleys. As you look at the pictures
and read the sentences, see if you can come up
with a definition of valley.

Two valleys between two mountain chains.

In the next few slides, you will see pictures of
different craters. As you look at the pictures
and read the sentences, see if you can come up
with a definition of a crater.
This is a picture of a crater in the middle of the Arizona desert.
This is a picture of a crater in Hawaii called Diamond Head.
Over time, this crater was filled with water to make Crater Lake in Oregon which
is 4,000 feet deep in some areas!

Here is a picture of some craters on the moon:
If you look closely, you will see that the craters are all different sizes and they cover the
surface of the moon.
Vocabulary word: meteorite
In the next few slides, you will see pictures of
different meteorites. As you look at the pictures
and read the sentences, see if you can come up
with a definition of a meteorite.
Here is a picture of a meteorite before it landed in Peru.
This is a meteorite that is on display in New York’s Museum of Natural History.
This is a meteorite that is on display in Chicago at the Adler Planetarium.

spacecraft
In the next few slides, you will see pictures of
astronauts and spacecrafts. As you look at the
pictures and read the sentences, see if you can
come up with definitions for astronaut and
spacecraft.
The astronaut is touching a part of the spacecraft.
You can see another spacecraft if you look closely at the back of the picture.
This spacecraft is much taller than the astronaut.
What do you think this spacecraft is used for?
On this mission, the astronaut is using two spacecrafts to do some research.
