PLUTO - Culture Editor Primary Function Can you tell the difference between your Monet and Picasso? How about the Strokes from your Saturdays? The Culture Editor is all about the artistic world around us, from music to film, Game of Thrones to GTA V. If that is you then you might be the perfect person to bring out Culture section to life. We need an individual with a critical mind, that is passionate about the arts, live-performances and theatre and be able to convey that with words. The Culture Editor will have a deep understanding and knowledge of all subsections that come under culture: gaming, music, TV & film, books and art. Major Responsibilities 1. Determines coverage for the culture section of the newspaper 2. Assigns and works with reporters on stories – enforcing strict deadlines. 3. Edits all copy and turns in articles to the editor in chief before the deadline set. 4. Provides a short review for the editor in chief from your section on where you have done well and where you can improve. 5. Works with Deputy Culture Editor, Head of Graphic Design and Head of Photography to determine graphics ideas for layout and to ensure photos are available. 6. Working with Online Culture Editor to ensure there is always content for both print and online without a crossover, and provide each other with ideas. 7. Working with Head of PR & Social Media to allow content to be shared on different accounts at the optimum time. Organisational Relationships Supervised by editor-in-chief and deputy editor Supervises deputy culture editor and culture writers Culture Editor Skills and Specifications Excellent understanding of what makes a good culture article. Understand of all sub-sections that come under Culture- Gaming, Music, Film & TV, Books and Art. Outstanding organisational skills Determination and commitment to the role A strong leader and communicator Outstanding reporting and writing skills. Attention to detail. Ability to work under stress and within deadlines. A basic knowledge of media law and Adobe InDesign Required Meetings and Hours • • • Attends weekly ‘story hand out’ meetings Attends editorial board meetings Presides over weekly art section meetings, if such meetings occur.
