Making Meaning-Reading (Mrs. Snead)

Of course, our snow day last week put us a bit behind. For about two more weeks we will be focused on “determining important ideas”. We will review and summarize the short story “Always

Moving: Julisa Velarde” from Voices from the Fields. For additional summarizing practice we will then use the book Dear Benjamin Banneker.

Please remember students should be reading appropriate leveled books at home for at least

180 minutes a week and recording the time on their reading log. Please help monitor that this is completed. This reading log needs to be signed to verify they have read the required minutes

and returned each Monday. Therefore, please return this reading log on Monday (3/11).

Vocabulary (Mrs. Snead)

Students will be introduced to new vocabulary words each week. This week’s words are:

unpredictable, understanding, and compatible. Information is best retained if it is applied to daily life. See if you can incorporate these words into your families’ conversations.

Being a Writer (Mrs. Vink)

Now that we have completed our persuasive essays, students will begin to share their writing with their classmates from the author's chair throughout the week. We will also be working on writing expository paragraphs, reviewing capitalization rules, practicing/reviewing compound sentence construction, and focusing on pronouns. Any student who has not passed the 3 Parts of

Speech quizzes which we have given weekly during both second and third quarter, will have 3 more opportunities to pass these quizzes on Tuesday (3/12), Tuesday (3/19) and Tuesday (3/26). These will be the last three opportunities for students to show proficiency in this area. Also, please remind your child that their weekly IDR writing summaries will be due on Friday (3/15).

Spelling/Grammar (Mrs. Vink)

Apostrophes will continue to be our focus in spelling to ensure that students know the difference between singular and plural possessive forms and contractions, which so often can be confusing. Also, the prefix/suffix/root quiz will once again be given on Friday (3/15). Students were given prefix/suffix/root flashcards a few weeks ago that they should be using to study with both at home and school.

Math (Mrs. Vink/Mrs.Snead)

The concepts for the week are as follows: using multiple representations to solve problems, examine the many different uses of variables in mathematics, and identify and define independent and dependent variables and quantities.

Mathia

Many parents have found success in talking with the Customer Service Department for any issues. Hopefully, your child is finished with Unit 4, and Unit 5 has been started. If you still have any questions, please contact the Carnegie Customer Service number at 1-877-401-2527.

Math Facts

There are still a small handful of students that need to keep practicing their basic math facts. Please practice these with your child whenever possible. These particular students will be retested at the end of third quarter.

Social Studies

Student will be reading about ancient Greece's tradition of the Olympics. We will be participating in our own mock Olympic games to earn medals for their polis this week, and we will finish looking at Greek gods/goddess and mythology.

Science (Mrs. Snead)

Lesson 3.5 will be begin the week and then the study guide will be discussed. This study guide was given out last week. The Learning Set 3 Test will be in the middle or end of the week.

Please see your student’s assignment notebook for a more specific date. This will conclude our study of the Ever-Changing Earth. We will move onto Energy. The textbook can be accessed online at http://ebook.its-about-time.com/student or through the wiki site (see below). The username is
