©National College of Midwifery Course Syllabus 2014 Revision 3/2014 Course Title: MSM- MW 510: Media or Art Project for Publication or Display Credits: 3 Course Description: The MSM candidate produces a media or art product that communicates important health messages to the community. This course gives the student experience in the tools and methods of conveying messages to the community regarding health issues. Learning Activities: A. Research media tools by reading journals, evaluating articles and displays meant to stimulate increased community health B. Research most recent publications on media communications C. Identify which communication tools you are most effective with by trying several to see what is most comfortable D. Write a story on your community’s maternal/child health to publish in your local Newspaper or utilize other medial or art project for display in your local public library E. Practice with several different media in order to see what is most personally effective for communicating your information Learning Materials / Resources: Please use textbooks less than 5 years old or most recent edition. 1. Most recent media texts for ideas in health promotion. 2. Most recent newspapers (may also include any or all of the following: presentations as posters at conferences, videos, street theater, art, etc.). 3. Most recent postings on the internet, sites such as YouTube, online magazines, blogs. Evaluation Tools / Methods: Learning Objectives count for 100% of the final completion: 1. Completion of the media or art presentation in the community, verified by preceptor. 2. Media Project/art presentation should reflect effective use of media tool to communicate message. 3. Media Project/art demonstrates understanding of health issues important to the community. Learning Objectives: A. Identify the subject that your community most needs information about by reviewing local health statistics, publications and interviewing (if necessary). B. Identify the media tool you can develop most effectively that is accessible to the community you wish to reach. Write a justification for choosing this tool. C. Craft your health message(s). D. Produce a media tool to communicate the health message(s) to the community. E. Document the process of creating this media tool and how you can identify whether or not you are reaching your target audience. 1 ©National College of Midwifery Course Syllabus 2014 Revision 3/2014 F. Organize your work into a portfolio that documents each step. Provide archive copies of whatever media you choose to use in your project. Course Credit: One Academic credit equals approximately 15 hours of formal time plus 30 hours of additional study or homework. Formal time is defined as the amount of time taken to answer the Learning Objectives to the level of 80% and to complete any learning activities to the preceptor's satisfaction, including any time spent face to face with the preceptor. Informal time includes any time spent actively reading relevant sources and textbook/s, researching Learning Objectives, and studying for examinations. The difference between undergraduate and graduate credits is not one of quantity, but of quality, as assessed by the preceptor. 2
