the SMS Library
Today you will learn all about the
parts of a book.
I.1.6.4 Recognize source of information in different
parts of a book: (eg: title page, table of contents,
index, glossary, Verso page, appendix, dedication
page, preface/foreward, author information,
bibliography, blurb, afterward)

The Outside of a Book
Sometime the outside of a book
is covered with a Book Jacket.
This is the paper or plastic
coated covering of a book that
is found on the outside of the
book which features the title of
the book, the author, a colorful
photo, and often a brief
Synopsis or summary of the
book and some biographical
information on the author.

The Frontispiece
is on the lefthand page
opposite the title
page that might
have an
illustration or
painting. Often
found in
biographies or
history books.

Some books have a
Half Title Page
that comes right
before the full
Title Page. It tells
us the title of the
book only and
usually has an
illustration.

•The Title Page tells
us the same
information as the
front cover PLUS it
tells us who the

The Dedication Page
usually comes right

The Foreward is an

everywhere: in books
and newspapers, in the
movies, in everyday
events, in dreams, in the
minds and mouths of
people, and, above all, in
our own lives.

The
Acknowledgment is
a list of everyone
who helped the
author produce the
book.
To all people who ask
me where I found the
stories and metaphors
that I use in my work.
