The Parts of a Book Welcome to the SMS Library Today you will learn all about the parts of a book. This is the paper or plastic coated covering of a book that is found on the outside of the book which features the title of the book, the author, a colorful photo, and often a brief Synopsis or summary of the book and some biographical information on the author. Inside the Front of a Book The Frontispiece is on the lefthand page opposite the title page that might have an illustration or painting. Often found in biographies or history books. It tells us the title of the book only and usually has an illustration. Sometimes it is called the Copyright Page. •It tells us the year the book was published and other publishing and printing information. Inside the Front of a Book The Dedication Page usually comes right before or after the Title Page. Sometimes the dedication is added to the Verso Page. Inside the Front of a Book FOREWARD The Foreward is an introductory remark at the beginning of a book written by someone other that the author. It introduces or praises the book. Throughout the history of mankind stories have played a part in learning at all levels. This book follows that tradition. People often ask, “Where do you find stories?” Stories are everywhere: in books and newspapers, in the movies, in everyday events, in dreams, in the minds and mouths of people, and, above all, in our own lives. A Chart A Map A Diagram Inside the Main Text of the Book A Caption is a title, short explanation, or description accompanying an illustration or a photograph. The Taj Mahal in India Inside the Back of the Book The Appendix is a collection of important information like charts, tables, and other resources usually found in the back of the book.
