Our Question
 A mole
of Big Macs
Stacked up would
reach from the
Earth to the Moon
and back how many
times?
Measurements





A Big Mac has a height of 5 cm ( 2 inches)
The distance from the centre of the Earth to the
Moon is 384, 403 km
Radius of Earth is 6378.1 km
Radius of Moon is 1737.4 km
Avogadro’s formula is 6.022 x 1023
Calculations






Distance from surface of Earth to surface of Moon = 384,
403 – 6378.1 – 1737.4 = 376287.5 km
376287.5 km x 100 000 = 37 628 750 000 cm
Distance from the Earth to the Moon and back is 37 628 750
000 cm x 2 = 75 257 500 000 cm
One mole of Big Macs = 5 x (6.022 x 1023 )
= 3.01100 × 1024
We know the units are the same (centimeters), so now
divide 3.01100 × 1024 cm by 75 257 500 000 cm to find the
answer
3.01100 × 1024 cm / 75 257 500 000 cm = 4 × 1013
Conclusion

Therefore, a mole of Big Macs can be stacked forty
trillion (40, 000, 000, 000, 000) times from the Earth
to the Moon and back. THAT IS A LOT!
