Objectives

Configure hostnames and IP addresses on two Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS)
switches using the command-line interface (CLI).

Use Cisco IOS commands to specify or limit access to the device configurations.

Use IOS commands to save the running configuration.

Configure two host devices with IP addresses.

Verify connectivity between the two PC end devices.
Reflection Sheet on Basic Switch Configuration - Brendon Hurley
What I did:
What I did in the lab included configuring two switches and two pc’s. The two pc’s were
configured with IP addresses and subnet masks. The two switches were configured with host names, an
ip address for the vlan one virtual management interface as well as other basic configuration
parameters such as passwords to limit access to the device.
Problems:
The only problem I encountered was when I was configuring the consol enable password; I put
in the wrong password because I was unaware of the predetermined passwords by the lab program. I
then restarted the lab and was unaware of the dynamics of the lab program and the passwords and
addresses unexpectedly changed. I often also found myself miss typing commands.
What I learned:
This lab tested my knowledge of basic switch and PC configuration. Throughout this chapter I
learned and recorded in my engineering journal, many new Cisco commands for the Cisco IOS.
Specifically, I learned how to name the switch, set encrypted passwords, and set a login message
banner. I learned that a layer 2 switch can be configured with an IP address for remote management
purposes. Additionally I learned, like all interfaces, the vlan one interface is shutdown by default and will
not work until enabled by the no shutdown command. Lastly I learned how to save a configuration from
RAM to NVRAM. As you can see I scored a 96% because of the password issue I encountered as
previously mentioned.
