My professional credo1 My professional teaching credo: Carol Yanez Introduction to Teaching 111 Prof. Eastman My professional credo2 Abstract Becoming a teacher has always been a dream of mine. Luckily I have been surrounded by people that are passionate about the teaching profession. My teaching philosophy is predisposed by Progressivism, Perennialism and Reconstructionism. Progressivism is my strongest teaching philosophy; my main focus is on the child and not the subject. I strongly believe that in order to be a successful teacher I need to focus on the child rather than the subject matter. The learning process has to connect deeply with the students and my role as a teacher is to assist this process. Another of my philosophies is Perennialism here I aim for students to obtain unchanging principles and great ideas. Along with these two philosophies I also consider Reconstructionism. Unfortunately society has lost many values and morals over time and what better place than a school to start building a better world. My goal as a teacher is to help my students achieve their own dreams. My professional credo3 Ever since I can remember becoming a teacher has bin a dream of mine. Being surrounded by teachers in my family inspired me to be one. I would have to say that the most important teacher that motivated me is my father. Even though he is a college professor and I want to be an elementary teacher. I am fortunate because I got to see firsthand what a teacher’s life is like and the big difference they make in our lives. I am very passionate about teaching children. I consider that other than a child’s family a teacher is the next important person in their lives. We are there to make a difference and help them learn and grow into great adults. I believe each child is competent of learning any and all material. My main teaching philosophy is progressivism. The more passionate I am about teaching the better students I will have. The biggest responsibility I will have as a teacher is to produce and preserve a classroom and curriculum that inspire students to learn. As students become more interested they will also build their own opinions and learn how to respectfully oppose with others. Working cooperatively in groups is a great way of achieving this goal. It is also important that children learn that not always what is true in the present may not be true later on. All students do not successfully learn through one given technique, but all are without doubt able of learning and deserve to learn. I consider that learning is most possible when each student is able to experience the concept in terms familiar to him or her. I think if accurate knowledge is to be acquired, it is My professional credo4 important to value the intelligences each student brings to the classroom and give each learner the chance to understand the concept in his or her own way. Another teaching philosophy that I consider to be important is Social Reconstructionism. Young children are the foundation to our future and I consider education the key to a better outlook. I will do my best to bring the world into my classroom. Going on field trips was one of the greatest and exiting ways I learned. My third grade teacher Mrs. Johnson was great with incorporating our community in our classroom. We had many activities for example, there were many students from different countries including myself; she took us to a multicultural parade. Here we got to try different kinds of food, see different clothes and hear different languages. Even though this was thirteen years ago I still remember everything I learned that day. I have had many different teachers through 21 years and for this I am very thankful. Each one taught me something different and helped make the person I am today. The things I learned from them I will never forget, they all encouraged me to do better. Learning is the best gift you could ever receive in life. Mrs. Johnson is the one that taught me the most from cultures to the English language. Her patients, kindness and encouragement were the answer to my success.
