Brianna Tovar Multicultural Education My father is Mexican and my mother was Caucasian. My grandfather moved here from Mexico and earned his citizenship. My grandmother claims that her great grandmother was Apache Indian. I think she likes to claim that because she says Apache Indians were mean and she is mean. It’s an excuse and it’s her excuse and she is sticking to it. My mother passed away when I was a child and my dad remarried a Mexican woman. No both my parents both speak Spanish and encouraged us to learn it but at that age we didn’t want anything to do with learning Spanish. Now that I’m older I could kick myself in the butt because I want to know Spanish. I thought I was too cool and didn’t want to learn it because none of my friends knew Spanish so why would I ever need it. My parents though used the fact that we didn’t speak Spanish as an advantage. They would have any conversations they didn’t want us to listen to in Spanish. Whether it is Christmas or if my mother disagreed with my father’s parenting skills (my father was always the lax push over while my mother was high velocity) they spoke in Spanish so we didn’t know a word they were saying. However after a while, we caught on. We knew they were talking about Christmas because of certain words we could understand. We knew they were fighting over our dad spoiling us because over certain words they spoke and the context they spoke it in. After a while, we would say, “You know I know what you are talking about.” Of course the bratty kids we were would throw it in their face. I only speak very little Spanish and can only understand my parents speaking Spanish. I feel that real Mexican’s speak Spanish fast and have a different dialect. If I had a time machine I would go back when I was child and my brain was developing faster and learn everything I could. My families cultural are every Christmas Eve to make Tamales. We get a whole line going of family members making tamales. It’s great. Another thing my family does that is because of our cultural are my cousins all have quincieria. My family was always the whitest out of the Uncles and Aunts so we did the sweet 16 but seeing my cousins sweet 15 and all of the loud Mexican music and BEER, lots and lots of beer made me grateful to have a cultural. I can’t forget about the yummy Mexican food. I’m hungry just thinking about. The dresses are just a tab bit over the top, especially for a woman just turning 15 but hey it’s them wearing it. The dances are fun to watch and I like the noises they create. I want to become a teacher because it’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was a child. I’m passionate about it. I want to be a positive influence in a child’s life. I feel that I’m positive and have so much energy and love to share that it will come as a second nature to me. I’m creative and want to find creative ways to teach students, that is what I’m passionate about. If you’ve ever listened to the secret of life then you know that whatever you love in this life is what you were meant to do. Also, having summers off doesn’t hurt.
