Louisiana Purchase Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery Louisiana Purchase Lewis and Clark President Thomas Jefferson purchased a large amount of land from France to further expand the United States. Two explorers who led an expedition to explore the new land purchased through the Louisiana Purchase Corps of Discovery The team of people that helped Lewis and Clark explore the land from the Louisiana Purchase. Record the following in your SS Notebook In the 1800’s many people were settling in the southeast. This land belonged to the Cherokee Native Americans This caused many conflicts over the land. President Andrew Jackson had to figure out a way to solve this issue. Copy the following in your notes: President Andrew Jackson singed the Indian Removal Act (a law) that made the Cherokee move to “Indian Territory” This “Indian Territory” was in present day Oklahoma. The Cherokee were forced to walk from the Southeast to Oklahoma (over 800 miles!!!) This journey became known as “The Trail of Tears” Stop and discuss: Why would they call the journey “The Trail of Tears”? The Cherokee population was over 20,000 people. The Indian Removal Act also affected other tribes of native Americans such as Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, and Seminole tribes. These tribes were eventually forced to move from their land as well. Over 80,000 people were forced to move due to the Indian Removal Act. Mexico was in control of most of the southwest such as Texas. Few people lived in Texas so Mexico encouraged Americans to come settle in the land. What do you think happened when more Americans begin to settle?!?!? Copy this in your notes: The Mexican American War General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was the leader of Mexico and he sent troops to Texas to enforce Mexican Laws. The American settlers formed an army and defeated the Mexican troops. Texas was added as a state in 1845. There was still a problem after Texas was declared a state , simply because Texas and Mexico were so close to each other The US and Mexican Armies debated and fought over the placement of the border of Texas Eventually the Mexican Government agreed to sale the Mexican Cession (see map ). America also bought the Gadsden Purchase. This added LOTS of land to the US. People begin to travel west in search of the resources and opportunities the land had to offer. Copy into your notes: Transportation Canals – human-made-water ways that connect bodies of water. This allowed for more safe and faster travels to western lands. What major canals does page 104 discuss? Steam Engine- 1807 Robert Fulton used a steam engine to power a boat. Steam engines were used in locomotives as well (trains). This made travel faster and cheaper. Jobs People begin to work more in factories and less at home. 1793 the first textile mill, a place where fiber for cloth is made, opened in Rhode Island. Eli Whitney also invented the cotton gin in 1793. 1837 Samuel F.B Morse invented the telegraph which created a way to communicate faster. What other inventions helped to make peoples lives easier during the Industrial Revolution? How did America’s expansion affect people? How did America’s expansion affect jobs and inventions? In your opinion, was the idea of Manifest Destiny positive or negative?
