The Louisiana Purchase
In 1803 Napoleon Bonaparte, the
emperor of France, needed money
to build his army to conquer Europe
The United States had wanted to
buy the city of New Orleans for a
long time so they had negotiators in
Paris, France
When Napoleon learned that America
wanted to buy New Orleans for $ 5
million he offered the whole Louisiana
territory for $ 15 million
That was over 500,000,000(828,000 mi² or 2,100,000
km²) acres of land for about 3 cents
an acre. It included land that went
from Louisiana all the way to
Montana in the Rocky Mountains
President Thomas Jefferson
thought that it was a great
opportunity for his country so he
said, “yes” to Napoleon
President Jefferson was so excited
about the new territory that he wanted
to send a team to explore it. He chose
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to
lead the expedition.
Lewis and Clark were to explore
the new territory all the way to the
Pacific Ocean
Lewis and Clark began their
journey on May 14th 1804. The
journey took over two years. They
finally returned on September 23rd,
1806
They were helped along the
way by a Native American
woman from the Shoshone tribe
named Sacagawea. She served
as a translator and a guide

War of 1812
• A second War
between the Great
Britain and the USA.
The major reasons for
this war were
• The British forcing
Americans into their
navy
• The British helping
the Indians against
the Americans
• The Southern states continued to rely on
agriculture and the growing of cash crops
including tobacco and cotton. The
invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney
allowed plantation owners to make huge
profits.
• In 1793 Eli Whitney
made the Cotton Gin
• This allowed a person
to clean over 50
pounds of cotton a
day
• What result is this
going to have?
• As a result the
demand for slaves
and land to grow
cotton is going to
increase greatly
McCormick Reaper
John Deere
Samuel Fulton’s Steamboat
Samuel Morse “Morse Code”
• The nation was trying to maintain an equal
number of Slave states and Free states.
In 1820 Congress passed the Missouri
Compromise that forbid slavery from
expanding into any territories north of
Missouri’s southern border.
Andrew Jackson 7th president
Indian Removal Act:
• The government
forcing Native
Americans in SE to
relocate to lands in
Oklahoma
• Trail of Tears: In 1838 the
government forced the
Cherokee to walk 800
miles from Alabama to
Oklahoma
• It was during the winter
and people died due to
the weather
• It is estimated that ¼ of
the people died on the
journey
Why Go West?
Manifest Destiny:
the belief that it
was America’s
Destiny to control
the continent from
the Atlantic to the
Pacific
• Thousands of
Americans traveled
west to:
• Find gold
• Trade
• Get free land
• Set up religious
communities
• Most traveled in some
kind of Wagon train
• In 1848 Gold was
discovered at
Sutter’s Mill on the
American river
near Sacramento
California
• Word spread and
from 1849 to 1853
nearly 300,000
people came to
California on the
“Gold Rush”
49ers
Texas
Texas was a state in Northern
Mexico. Many Americans moved to
Texas to get free land
Mexicans were mad at the Americans
because they brought their slaves to
Texas and didn’t follow the Catholic
religion
The Mexican president Antonio
Lopez de Santa Anna sent soldiers
to Texas to make the Americans
obey Mexican laws
In 1836 180 American soldiers fought
the Mexican army at a place called the
Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. All the
Americans were killed
After the Alamo, the Americans fought the Mexican
general Santa Anna again. As they fought the
Americans cried, “remember the Alamo” This time
the Americans won and said that Texas was an
independent country.
1821-1855
Some bad years – Santa Ana
• In the Compromise of 1850, California
was admitted as a free state and the Utah
and New Mexico territories were allowed
to decide on their own if they wanted
slavery or not.
• A secret network known as the
Underground Railroad helped many
slaves escape from slavery and brought
them to the North and also into Canada.
One of the most famous “conductors” was
Harriet Tubman.
• One of the most famous abolitionists in
Kansas was John Brown. John Brown
believed that God had called on him to rid
the country of slavery by force. In all over
200 people would die in the violence.
• Over the next few years the free North and
slave South continued to argue about
slavery. On October 16, 1859 John Brown
and his followers captured a federal
arsenal hoping that this would cause a
slave uprising.
Popular Sovereignty
• The belief that a new
state has the right to
hold a vote to decide
for itself if it wants to
allow slavery
