Short Answer: Pick three out of the following five questions and write a short response in complete
sentences on the reverse side of this paper. Identify which #s you are responding to.
1. Describe the geographical characteristics of South America and how they differ from those of Central
America. South America has a much more rugged and diverse landscape than Central
America mainly due to the Andes Mountains and the Brazilian and Guiana Highlands.
These rugged landscapes, including the Altiplano, created a dry, and harsh environment.
Central America has more lowlands, with hills and a couple mountain ranges. However,
they are not as big as those of South America.
2. What was a quipu and how was it used? Why was it important? A quipu was a rope of varying
lengths and colors of string. The strings had knots on them to and this served as a means
of keeping records, for taxes, crop production, and even family history. They are
important today because, like books, they tell a story about the civilization. They were
important to the Inca because they helped the society keep track of important
information.
3. What advantage did Pizarro have which helped him defeat the Inca? Pizarro, like many Spanish
conquerors, had the advantage of horses and firearms but perhaps the biggest advantage
in his favor was that a civil war was already breaking out among the Inca due to a conflict
over rivaling leaders in 1527.
4. What are two of the most important contributions of the Inca? They were very advanced in their
stonework. They built structures which are still very stable and stranding to this day and
they did it by fitting the rocks together like puzzle pieces. They also managed to develop a
complex road system for trade and movement of members of the empire. This was a
great challenge due to the rugged landscape which they had to carve the roads into.
5. How do we know about the Mochica/Chavin? Why are they important? The main reason we know
about the the Mochica and Chavin is through their artwork which influenced the Inca
that came after them. Their artwork was very detailed and included pottery and
weavings which give archeologists clues about their beliefs and lifestyle.
Bonus Question:
Why was Inca Viracocha viewed as cowardly? He fled Cuzco after the threat of attack from the
Chancas.
What is a biome? A biome is a region with a distinct climate and plant/animal life.
