Basic Genetics Phenotype – an organisms observable traits Genotype – the traits that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genetic material Basic Genetics • Genes - basic unit of heredity in a living organism • Genes are located on chromosomes – Threadlike structures in the nucleus of each cell • Chromosomes occur in matched pairs • Each species has a characteristic number of pairs of chromosomes in each body cell – Humans? • The two genes (alleles) that control each trait are situated at the same locus, one on each chromosome of a particular pair.
