6th Grade - Sketchbook Assignment 10: Pencil Shading
Create a full-page composition that includes overlapping and
smooth value transitions.
1.
Follow the DEMO and fill in the value scales on the back of this page.
2. Using PENCIL, draw a shape on your page. This could be geometric, organic or a
silhouette of an object.
3. Now, fill the page with overlapping shapes. They can be the same as your original
page or a variety of shapes.
4. You must have some shapes that go off the page on all sides.
5. No positive or negative spaces may be larger than your fist.
6. Using a PENCIL, fill each positive or negative space with smooth pencil gradations
(from light to dark).
7. Make sure that where gradations touch, opposite values meet.
