Year 6 Weekly News 21st September 2015 We break through the barriers of cloud in order to reach the stars, knowing that our lessons come from the journey not the destination. Welcome to Year 6 Our team: Mrs Pickering, Mrs Parry, Mr Wilson, Mrs Tagg, Mrs Shipp and Miss Sarai The children have made a great start to the year. They have been involved in some initial assessments and have started working in their Maths and English sets. They have also been exploring this terms history topic. The homework project launch went well. Our thanks to all parents who attended to support their child in planning their homework project. (more details of homework in homework section) Our weekly newsletter will keep you informed about what your child is learning and suggest how you can help to support the school and your child at home. We really value your involvement and believe a positive and supportive home school relationship is essential. If you have any problems or concerns at any point, please come and talk to a member of staff so that we can deal with it promptly. English We will continue our work on ‘Little Ships’ and will write some descriptions of the scenes in the story and complete a re-tell of it. SPAG work, will involve looking at new terminology in light of the new curriculum and focus on word classes, including subject/object, active/passive and adverbials. Science We will be beginning our topic ‘Inheritance and Evolution’. We will recap on our learning about fossils, remembering that fossils provide evidence about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago. We will be discussing extinction of animals and plants and how there have been changes over time. Maths Our focus this week will be on the place value of numbers - being able to read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000. Children will work on rounding numbers, using negative numbers, multiplying whole and decimal numbers by 10/100/1000. You should also be working on learning your table facts until you are secure in all facts up to 12 x 12. Computing This week in computing we will be working on E-Safety task with a learning partner, looking at different scenarios and discussing safe profiling and how to safely use the internet, in particular social networking sites. We will also begin our topic ‘We are Market Researchers’ where we begin researching the App market by creating own online surveys for data collection. These results will help us to begin to gather ideas for designing a new ipad app. Topic - Exploring Ancient Worlds This week we will be continuing our topic, Exploring Ancient Worlds. We will be learning about the ancient city of Baghdad and the main reasons why people came to the city to live. PE This half term in PE we will be doing Outdoor and adventurous activities. We will select appropriate equipment for the activity and identify possible risks and learn to manage them. We will take on both leadership and team roles. We will also be developing some gymnastic skills and create complex and well executed sequences that contain a range of movements. French This week we will record how to greet people in French and also start to learn the numbers up to 20. We will also start looking at the French city of Marseille and comparing it with Milton Keynes. Music This week we will begin learning about writing and reading music by learning the names and pictorial representation of different musical notes. We will recreate notes on the musical stave and understand the purpose of the treble and bass clefs. Project Homework This half term we would like you to focus on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You will need to find and locate all seven of them before choosing one to present in more detail. This can be in any form that you choose. Weekly Homework Homework is given out on a Friday and due back in on the following Wednesday. Reading 3 times a week Spellings to practice A piece of English or Maths MY MATHS and BUG CLUB You now have your login details for My Maths and Bug Club – there is an expectation that you go on line regularly to complete tasks set by your teachers. If you experience problems, please let a member of staff know. READING There is an expectation that you read to an adult at home at least 3 times every week. Your reading record book will be checked weekly to check this is happening. All children who read at least 3 times a week and who can show a record of their reading in the reading record book, will be entered into the Orchard Reading Raffle. The raffle will be drawn on a Friday. There will be one winner from each class, who will choose a book to keep.
