Whole Cast Choreography: ……….Katherine Stefansky History of Broadway The Hollywood musical film dates back to 1927, when Warner Brothers developed the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system that gave a voice to the movies. The first singing voice introduced on film was that of Al Jolson, who gave up his top starring Broadway career to take the leading role in The Jazz Singer, a silent film with several sequences of songs and spoken dialogue synchronized with the action on screen. Premiered at the Wamer Brothers flagship theatre in New York, The Jazz Singer caused a sensation among cinemagoers, changing the face of the film making industry forever. Despite some notable failures, quickly consigned to oblivion, the musical film made steady progress during the 1930s. Among the outstanding fins of this period were 42nd Street and, in 1937, the first animated musical, Walt Disney's Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. MGM's The Wizard of Oz, released in 1939, is generally accepted to be the first Technicolor film musical masterpiece. Although by no means the first integrated musical film, it set a standard by which others would be judged. Throughout the 1940's, America was either preparing for, fighting in or recovering from World War II. Moviegoers needed breaks from nightmarish realities, so humor and unquestioning praise for "all-American values" were Hollywood's cinematic order of the day. Each major studio had its own approach to churning out hits. Successful Broadway shows continued to provide material for the film makers during the this year, a decade that saw the return to the back-stage musical. The 1950s opened on a high note with the filming of The King & I and South Pacific, It is the year that is both the brightest and the saddest for the Hollywood musical. At the same time, television drew customers away from movie theatres. The best film musicals of the 1950's set their musical numbers in the context of everyday life. This blend of song with real life activities had been a staple in stage musicals for decades. Except for a few original hits, most of the musicals filmed in the 1960's were Broadway retreads. The best of these also became the highest-grossing screen musicals of all time (A Hard Day’s Night by the Beatles). The next decade brought out the best and the worst in big screen musical entertainment. Luckily, the 1970's would bring more than a few "Little Things" that would prove to be "Singular Sensations." The Broadway musical wasn't dead – it was just preparing to morph. By 1980, the consensus in the business was that film musicals were dead and buried. This time it would take puppets and dancing teapots to prove the experts wrong. In Hollywood, it takes all kinds. Several big-budget screen musicals lost millions in the early 1980's. Pink Floyd - The Wall (1982) was a hit with a limited audience, but it was a precursor of music videos, not a musical. Proclaimed dead, the film musical started kicking its way out of the grave, becoming a top-grossing genre in the 1990's. Animated musicals were one of the most lucrative genres of the late 20th Century Titanic and Ragtime proved that the Broadway musical was still capable of artistic achievement in the 1990's. Broadway's 2000-2001 season saw musicals filled with laughter, joy and genuine wit return with a vengeance. The Producers and The Full Monty did what great musical comedies have always done -- approach their topics in a fresh and funny way no one could have attempted before. Musicals will go places some of us may not care to follow. But so long as a song helps to tell a story, the musical will live on, "skipping a beat, singing a dream." The musical theatre will go on, and the showtune will never die.
