THE THREE ESTATES DIARY ENTRY
Learning Goal(s): SWBAT understand how various ideals such as liberty, natural rights
and democracy, become driving forces for reform and revolution, SWBAT understand how
a person’s social, economic and political class can effect their political perspective and
goals and agendas during a revolution
Task: You will pretend you are living in France on the eve of the French Revolution. You
will choose a character from the list below and write a diary entry from their perspective
detailing their feelings about the estate system and their lives under it. You should
incorporate all of today’s vocabulary words (estate, Estates-General and bourgeoisie)
and at least 5 facts learned in class about the estate system into your diary entry.
Characters:

The Archbishop/Abbess of Reims– a high-ranking member of the Catholic clergy
whose church members include the d’Bourbon, the Pauvres, the Lefevre and the
Banquier families

Duc/Duchesse d’Bourbon – a nobleman/woman who owns a vast estate with many
peasant renters

Jacques/Jeanne Pauvres – a peasant farmer with 9 children who rents a small plot of
land from the Duc/Duchesse d’Bourbon and buys horseshoes from Charles Lefevre’s
smithy

Charles Lefevre – a prosperous blacksmith who uses Arnaud Banquier’s bank

Arnaud Banquier – a successful banker/businessman who frequents the salons of
Madame Geoffrin where he talks with thinkers like Voltaire and Rousseau
