What will my student be doing in
Theatre Arts this year?

Advanced Theatre Arts is all about
production and all of its components.
A big difference between Advanced Theatre and
Intermediate Theatre is that we work with longer
scripts, more challenging material, and students
are expected to learn and use our Cafetorium
sound, lights, and scenery to produce shows they
can be proud of. They take more ownership of the
day-to-day operations of the classroom.
What does my student do on a dayto-day basis in Theatre Arts?
Daily warm-up: journal/discussion,
vocal/physical warm-up, or Star of the
Week
 Guided learning – via schoology or direct
teach
 Applying what we’ve learned – working
on productions (some group, some
whole-class)

When can I come watch my student
perform?

Advanced Theatre Arts Major Performance
“The Lion Who Wouldn’t”:
◦
◦
◦
◦
2nd period: Tuesday, January 13 @ 6 pm
7th period: Wednesday, January 14 @ 6 pm
Cast/Crew call is @ 5 pm each night.
Every student will have a crucial “part to play”,
therefore this is a mandatory performance for all
Advanced Theatre students; please plan accordingly.
When can I come watch my student
perform?

Smaller projects throughout the year
◦ Performed during students’ Theatre Arts classes.
Dates TBD.

Student Directed One-Act Plays
◦ To be performed in the Spring during students’
Theatre Arts classes. Exact dates to be announced; I’ll
post it on my website and send out reminder e-mails.
What is the best way for me to
keep informed about Theatre Arts?

website
 I will send home e-mails with important
project dates, etc…

What are some non-negotiables in
the Theatre classroom?


I work hard to have a good relationship with all
students and foster mutual respect. Typical middle
school behaviors are managed through consistent
expectations and relationships with
parents/students/admin.
Here are a few “hard and fast” rules that don’t
have much gray area:
◦ Absolutely no gum, food, drinks (other than water),
candy, mints, etc… in the Theatre Arts Room.
◦ HBMS Tardy Policy is enforced.
◦ Treat our gorgeous facility with care and attention.
How will my student be assessed in
Theatre Arts this year?


40% daily work – daily journals, discussions,
warm-ups, small skits, vocal work, etc..
60% major grades – performances (rubricbased assessments), tests, quizzes
*A note about grades on schoology: While I
do grade some assignments in schoology, the
average posted there is not a true reflection of
a student’s average because not everything is
graded in schoology. Please refer to
TxConnect for accurate, complete grades in
this class.
How can I help out?

We are always in need of:
◦
◦
◦
◦

Safety Pins
Bobby Pins
Gently used hair and make-up products
Men’s and Women’s dress shoes
I’m also looking for:
◦ Someone to craft/sew/hot glue some “blackout”
curtains for my 7 classroom windows!

Show-specific needs throughout the year:
◦ I will e-mail parents with help requests, especially
as our January show date nears.
