But there was not a book about 1969 until Rob Kirkpatrick decided to write ‘The Year Everything Changed’. He didn’t think it was aokay to have books that cover all years except this year, 1969. It was just the year when very important things happened. In 1969, a man landedand walked on the moon, his name was Neil Armstrong. The “Miracle Mets” Jordan Ray charmedd sports fans; students took over college campuses and demonstrators had battles with police. America watched the Woodstock music festival, Kurt Vonnegut published SlaughterhouseFive. Punk music was invented, and there was a murder at Altamont Speedway. Powerful, timely, and a blast to read, 1969 chronicles the year in culture and society, sports, music, film, politics, and technology. This deep, comprehensive history is perfect for those who survived 1969 or for those who simply want to feel as though they did. Richard Nixon Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California. He graduated from Whittier College in 1934 and Duke University School of Law in 1937, returning to California to practice law. He and his wife, Pat Nixon, moved to Washington to work for the federal government in 1942. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Nixon was elected in California to the House of Representatives in 1946 and to the Senate in 1950. His pursuit of the Alger Hiss case established his reputation as a leading anti-communist, and elevated him to national prominence. He was the running mate of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Republican Party presidential nominee in the 1952 election. Nixon served for eight years as vice president. He waged an unsuccessful presidential campaign in 1960, narrowly losing to John F. Kennedy, and lost a race for Governor of California in 1962. In 1968, he ran again for the presidency and was elected. Although Nixon initially escalated America's involvement in the Vietnam War, he subsequently ended U.S. involvement in 1973. Nixon's visit to the People's Republic of China in 1972 opened diplomatic relations between the two nations, and he initiated détente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union the same year. Domestically, his administration generally embraced policies that transferred power from Washington to the states. Among other things, he launched initiatives to fight cancer and illegal drugs, imposed wage and price controls, enforced desegregation of some Southern schools, and established the Environmental Protection Agency. Though he presided over the lunar landings beginning with Apollo 11, he scaled back manned space exploration. He was re-elected by a landslide in 1972. Nixon's second term saw an Arab oil embargo, the resignation of his vice president, Spiro Agnew, and a continuing series of revelations about the Watergate scandal and other misconduct by members of the administration. The scandal escalated, costing Nixon much of his political support, and on August 9, 1974, he resigned in the face of almost certain impeachment and removal from office. After his resignation, he controversially received a pardon issued by his successor, Gerald Ford. In retirement, Nixon's work as an elder statesman, authoring several books and undertaking many foreign trips, helped to rehabilitate his public image. He suffered a debilitating stroke on April 18, 1994, and died four days later at the age of 81. Hippie Clothes What ever was sold at Salvation Army, surplus army navy stores, bell bottoms came from navy surplus, clothes from India. Hand made anything. The whole point with buying Salvation Army, surplus clothes was not to consume. They had long hair which was sometimes braided. Also they wore a leather band around their foreheads. This helped keep long hair more manageable, wide legged bell bottoms, tye dye shirts, ultra mini skirts, big hoop gold earrings, lots of jeans and T-shirts, and barefooted most of the time they could get by with it, otherwise sandals. 1969 Movies—Easy Rider Easy Rider is a 1969 American road movie written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern, produced by Fonda and directed by Hopper. It tells the story of two bikers (played by Fonda and Hopper) who travel through the American Southwest and South. The success of Easy Rider helped spark the New Hollywood phase of filmmaking during the early 1970s. The film was added to the Library of Congress National Registry in 1998.A landmark counterculture film, and a "touchstone for a generation" that "captured the national imagination, Easy Rider explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise and fall of the hippie movement, drug use, and communal lifestyle. Easy Rider is famous for its use of real drugs in its portrayal of marijuana and other substances. 1969 Restaurant Alice's Restaurant is a 1969 American comedy film cowritten and directed by Arthur Penn. It is an adaptation of the 1967 folk song of the same name by singer and songwriter Arlo Guthrie. The film stars Guthrie as himself, with Pat Quinn as Alice Brock and James Broderick as Ray Brock. Contrary to popular belief, while Arlo Guthrie wrote the lyrics and music for the narrative song Alice’s Restaurant Massacre, he neither wrote nor co-wrote the screenplay for the film Alice’s Restaurant, which was instead co-written by Venable Herndon and Arthur Penn. Topic of Interest The thing that had my interest the most was how the hippies dressed and all of their actions. It affected me the most because of the things they could do back in the 60’s we cannot do now.
