English 10 World Literature Course Syllabus 2014-2015 Mrs. Maher KReed-Maher@methacton.org Goals: Acquaint students with a variety of literary forms emphasizing various cultures To promote comprehension and understanding of the written word To provide students with opportunities, oral and written, to recognize, interpret and analyze elements of literature To develop an understanding of vocabulary in order to build writing and speaking skills To review and incorporate grammar, punctuation, capitalization in written communication To organize oral presentations with emphasis on both the message and audience To utilize the research process Topics to be covered: Literature – World Tapestries selections, World Masterpiece selections and supplements at teacher discretion Speeches – Demonstration/visual aid, Persuasive, additional at teacher’s discretion Writing – Vocabulary sentences, Essays/Paragraphs, Research paper, Performance tasks Assignments and Procedures: 1. Course requirements - Research project, two speeches and comprehensive midterm and final exam. English 10 is a requirement for graduation 2. Assessment will be through quizzes, in-class reading and writing assignments and projects at teacher’s discretion 3.
