INVITATION TO APPLY FOR POSITIONS IN TERMS OF THE NEW GENERATION OF ACADEMICS PROGRAMME
Purpose of the position:
The North-West University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following positions, which form part of the
New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Preference will be
given to applications from black (African, coloured and Indian) and/or female candidates, with a target that at least 80% of applicants
should be appointed from these groups.
The nGAP represents the first phase of the Staffing South African Universities Framework (SSAUF), which the Minister of Higher
Education and Training approved at the start of 2015 as an initiative to improve the academic staffing capacity of South African
universities. The programme takes as a starting point the urgent and challenging imperative to recruit, support and retain black
(African, coloured and Indian) and female academic staff to address their serious under-representation at all levels in the sector. It
will be a key vehicle to contribute to the transformation of the academic staff profile in disciplinary areas of greatest need.
nGAP employees will participate in a six-year developmental programme in terms of which they will be employed on a permanent
full-time basis at the NWU under the University’s normal conditions of service. They will be expected to register for and complete
their master’s degree or doctoral studies, participate successfully in the DHET’s Staffing South Africa’s Universities Development
Programme, and work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. In order to achieve the developmental aims of the programme,
nGAP employees will have a reduced teaching load over the first four years of their appointment.
Responsibilities:

Completion of a master’s degree or PhD in Engineering

Development and presentation of undergraduate modules in Industrial Engineering

Participation in the research activities of the department

Provision of postgraduate supervision if appropriate

Supervision of students in the final-year project

Contribution to community-service activities

Participation in the SSAUF development programme of the DHET

Management, liaison and administrative activities
Minimum requirements:

Junior Lecturer: BEng/BSc (Eng) in Industrial Engineering, or BTech in Industrial Engineering and five years’ relevant industry
experience, or any BEng/BScEng/appropriate BScHons and three years’ relevant industry experience.

Lecturer: MEng/MSc (Eng) in Industrial Engineering, or MTech in Industrial Engineering and five years’ relevant industry
experience or any MEng/MScEng and three years’ relevant industry experience.
Other competency requirements:

Computer literacy, with the ability to use various Microsoft programs

The ability to build and maintain sound interpersonal relations and function effectively as part of a team

The ability to function independently and to solve problems in a systematic and accurate manner

Good verbal and written communication skills, including lecturing skills, report-writing and other academic writing skills

Willingness to guide students in various practical settings

Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
