• Today we are going to learn about one of the
organ systems—the skeletal system. This
system is all about the bones in our bodies.
Bones have five different functions, or
purposes. At first glance, the skeletal system
might not seem as important as some of the
other systems, but today you’ll learn why we
can’t live without it.
Notes
• Remember to be filling in your notes sheet as
we go through the information together. After
we write our notes, we will review using the
PowerPoint.
• What are the five functions of the skeletal
system?
Functions of Bones
1. Provide shape

and support to the

Protect internal
organs
Enable motion
Make blood cells
Store minerals
Function #1: Shape &
Support
• Provide
shape and
support to the
body
Bones determine an animal’s
shape
Shape is determined by
bones
Not just shape, but support
Function #2: Protect Internal
Organs
• Protect internal
organs
Function #3: Help us to move
• Enable motion by
giving muscles a
place to attach
themselves

Function #4: Make Blood
Cells
• Make blood cells
Function #5: Store Minerals
• Got Milk?
• Your body stores
•
calcium and other
minerals in your
bones, so you can
save them for later.
Eating/drinking
calcium makes bones
stronger, because
more minerals are
stored inside them.

Bone Facts
• Bone is five times stronger than mild steel.
• Every three months our bone cells are
completely replaced.
• Almost a quarter of your bones are in your
feet and ankles.
• One out of 20 people have an extra rib.
• A person's nose and ears continue to grow
throughout his or her life.
• Your thumb is the same size as your nose.
Glossary Time
• Add Skeletal System to your glossary with
the PAGE NUMBER.
• Complete the Skeletal System worksheet on
your own.
Tuesday Feb 5 or Wednesday Feb 6
Do Now:
1. What is stored inside of bones?
2. What does blood have to do with the skeletal
system?
3. True or False: It is possible to live without the
skeletal system.

Shape of Bones Lab
Page
Today’s Plan
• Read about the skeletal system to reinforce
what we learned last time and to learn even
more about this organ system
• Complete the Shape of Bones lab to better
understand how the shape of bones impacts
their strength
• Complete an exit slip to make sure you
understand the skeletal system
Skeletal System Article
• Read about the skeletal system together and
then answer the questions on the worksheet.
Shape of Bones Lab
• Follow the directions to complete the lab.
• Cylinder: A 3-D object that has
two flat circular ends
• Rectangular Prism: a 3-D rectangular
object with 6 faces
• Triangular Prism: a 3-D prism with
triangles for bases
Exit Slip Time!
• Label your note card with your FIRST AND
LAST NAME, DATE, and HOUR. Labeling this
correctly is worth one point.

Exit Slip
• Clear everything off of your table. Close lab
books and put them on the floor.
• NO TALKING, at all. If you have a question
raise your hand SILENTLY and wait for the
teacher.
• When you’re done, flip your exit slip over and
draw a picture of a skull.
Question 1
1. True or False: We would not be able to move
without the skeletal system.
Question 2
2. True or False: Blood cells are made inside of
bones, so without the skeletal system we would
not have blood.
Question 3
3. Which is not a function of the skeletal system:
a) Protection
b) Movement
c) Storage
d) Strength
e) Support
Question 4
4. Write at least one sentence explaining why
we need to skeletal system to stay alive.
Thursday Feb 7 or Friday Feb 8
Do Now:
1. Explain how the skeletal system helps with
movement.
2. What do you know about the muscular system?
3. True or False: Your heart is a muscle.

your notes sheet as we go through it together.
Facts about the Muscular System
• A single muscle cell of the sartorius muscle in
the thigh can be more than 12 inches long.
• The strongest muscle of the body is the
masseter muscle used for chewing!
• Your hand contains 20 different muscles.
• If all your muscles could pull in one direction
you could create a force of 25 tons!
• Muscles account for approximately 40% of
your body weight.
• No matter how much you exercise you can not
increase the number of muscle cells you have.
By getting bigger, via strength training, you are
simply increasing the size of each muscle cell.
• The muscle that lets your eye blink is the
fastest muscle in your body. It allows you to
blink 5 times a second.
• You have all the muscle fiber you will ever
have at birth. Once damaged they can't be
replaced.
• Arnold Schwarzenegger has as many muscle
fibers as you - They're just thicker!
• Want to know more
about steroids? Check out
the extra credit
opportunity later.
• Banging your head against a wall uses 150
calories an hour.
• The record for most pushups ever performed
in one day is 46,001.
• Weight lifters who work out in gyms
decorated in blue can lift heavier weights.
• Kissing for one minute burns 26 calories.
• The amount of time in a day that a
preschooler is sedentary: 89%.
