David Sutherland Productions – Boston/Waltham A veteran PBS documentary filmmaker, David Sutherland has been one of the pioneers of cinema verite, and a cornerstone of the documentary field for more than 30 years. His credits include the PBS/Frontline highly-acclaimed films The Farmer’s Wife, Kind Hearted Woman and Country Boys, which collectively had more than 36 million viewers. Filmmakers Collaborative – Waltham, MA Filmmakers Collaborative (FC) is a national nonprofit media organization that encourages and supports the making of great films and media projects by people of all ages and experience levels. Based in Waltham, MA (accessible by commuter rail from Porter Square station in Cambridge), FC provides grants management, mentoring and workshops to a diverse and national community that includes award-winning PBS documentarians, first time producers and directors, and young people just discovering the power and potential of visual media. In 2013 FC launched the Boston International Kids Film Festival, in partnership with Tufts University's Film & Media Studies program. FC is seeking a wintern who can help us expand our network of festival sponsors, partners, advertisers and attendees; find schools and organizations to host film screenings and workshops during the school year; organize and edit footage and photos gathered from the 2015 BIKFF; and provide administrative support to FC. As far as possible, we will tailor the job to the students' expertise and interests. If the wintern has a specific interest, WBUR will tailor the winternship to his/her needs. WGBH Radio - Boston The selected wintern will work with Craig LeMoult. His features have run nationally on NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Weekend Edition, as well as on Marketplace. LeMoult has won a number of national and regional awards for his reporting, including the national Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi award feature reporting in 2011, first place awards in 2012 and 2009 from the national Public Radio News Directors Inc. and second place in 2007 from the national Society of Environmental Journalists. LeMoult is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Tufts University. LOS ANGELES Bona Fide Productions – Los Angeles Bona Fide Productions is a Los Angeles-based company that has produced films such as Little Miss Sunshine, Little Children, Election, Cold Mountain, King of The Hill, and Ruby Sparks. The wintern's responsibilities include reading scripts and writing coverage, watching films and actor/director reels, doing research projects, answering phones, and light administrative work. The wintern should have an interest in independent film, be able to multitask, and be Mac-proficient. Spotlight Communications Group – Los Angeles Spotlight Communications Group is a full service public relations and marketing company, specializing in the health & beauty industry. In this role, the wintern will gain hands-on experience by shadowing company president Candis Melamed and working work closely with her team. We're looking to redefine what "women's interest" looks like. The intern will work directly with editors to conceive, pitch, write, revise, produce, and ultimately contribute two to three posts to her assigned vertical each day. This is a very writing-intensive internship, and interns should have a proven writing background, as well as a vested interest in the subject matter. The intern will come away from the internship with an idea of how to work with an editor at a web publishing company, as well as a small portfolio of published clips. A sales/marketing internship will provide exposure to the dynamic and evolving publishing business. Seftel Productions – New York City – 3 Winterns Seftel Productions is a boutique production company that produces award- winning documentaries, feature films, commercials, and digital media. Dedicated to creating artful, engaging work with a social conscience, our productions have appeared on HBO, PBS, A&E, Bravo, Showtime, and many others. Recent highlights include the ongoing Emmy and Webby-nominated PBS series The Secret Life of Scientists, the Telly Awardwinning 13-part series for Public Television Invitation to World Literature, the acclaimed PBS series NOVA Science NOW, and the PBS prime time mini-series Lidia Celebrates America, featuring chef Lidia Bastianich. Additionally, Seftel Productions has been a pioneer in the digital realm, producing web series for Liberty Mutual’s prestigious website the Responsibility Project, and well as the Case Award-winning web campaign The Human Factor, which raised $500 million for MIT in just 9 months. Interns will work closely with the company’s core staff in four areas: 1. Development: Assisting with projects in development. Tasks include performing essential research, writing script coverage and helping to keep projects organized. 2. Production Management Support: Helping our production manager to execute shoots. Tasks include preparing call sheets, booking travel, expense reports, location research and obtaining permits. 3. Daily office tasks: General support in keeping our office organized and productive. Tasks might include filing and making runs. 4. Archival research: Assisting our archival researcher in finding and organizing photos and video content. Requires an inquisitive mind, a diligent eye for detail and a creative eye. Tasks include tracking down photos, organizing files and seeing projects through to their completion, including legal shutdown and paperwork. Starwood Hotels – New York City Starwood Hotels is one of the world's largest hotel companies. It owns, operates, franchises and manages over 1200 hotels, resorts, spas and vacation properties worldwide. Some of its signature properties include the Westin, Sheraton and W hotel chains. The wintern will work with Alex Stein, A12, who is a social media and digital analytics strategist for the company. Trickle Up – New York City Since 1979, Trickle Up has been empowering people living in extreme poverty to take the first steps out of poverty, providing them with resources to build livelihoods for a better quality of life. Trickle Up works with community-based partner agencies in Asia, Africa, Central America, and the Middle East to deliver our program of seed capital grants, training and savings support. In the past five years, we have helped help start or expand nearly 50,000 enterprises, improving the lives of more than 250,000 people. The wintern will "shadow" Trickle Up’s president through meetings with staff, donors, and others. The experience will provide the intern with greater knowledge of global poverty, as well as a deeper understanding of the program, fundraising, communications, finance, and administration functions of a nonprofit organization. WNET/Channel 13 – New York City – 2 Winterns As the flagship public broadcaster in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut metro area, Thirteen/WNET reaches millions of viewers each week. It airs the best of American public television, along with its own local productions. One of the Tufts winterns will work with the staff of MetroFocus, a multi-platform news magazine focused on arts, culture, and life in the New York region. The other wintern will work with MMG Arts. As an innovative business initiative of WNET, MMG Arts is a centralized database of arts programming that provides public television stations throughout the nation with a series of broadcast and web platforms, including video segments, scripts, and more, which independent stations can use to develop their own unique weekly art programs. Young and Rubicam (Y&R) Advertising – New York City – 2 Winterns Young and Rubicam Advertising is a major marketing communications firm looking for a dynamic candidate to shadow one of its strategists for the week. The wintern will be asked to pull together some information while they are there, using Young and Rubicam research sources. The right person will have curiosity about people and their behavior as well as an appreciation of popular culture and an interest in marketing and creativity. The wintern will be asked to prepare something to share with Young and Rubicam staff in January. They should bring a point of view about consumer products or service brands that they feel have done something in digital or social media to connect really well to college students or other young people. Nancy Glass Productions is an award winning television innovation offering a fresh creative style for cable programming, broadband and web production, working in both standard and high definition with full post production facilities and a special effects studio. Clients include: HGTV, DIY, A&E, Veria, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Food Network and many more. WASHINGTON (STATE) Kima-TV – Yakima, Washington KIMA-TV is the CBS affiliated television station serving the Yakima, Washington region. The station is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group. KIMA offers the only local Yakimafocused newscast on weekdays for KIMA Action News at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. and has maintained the #1 TV station ranking for the Yakima-Pasco-Richland-Kennewick viewership market. About the winternship: The student can shadow reporters and attend morning news meetings with opportunities to pitch stories, assist with interviews, and also see how the reporting process is completed for broadcast deadline -- such as filming, interviewing, writing the story and editing footage.
