Three Renaissance authors

Sangwoo Nam

Sir Thomas Browne

• born Oct. 19th, 1605 in London

• was a famous English physician and writer

• lost his father; gained his fortune

• transferred from Winchester College to

University of Oxford

• received his Bachelor of Arts and Master in

Arts

• visited Ireland with his step-father

Works

• wrote Religio Medici in 1635

– was very popular in Britain because of the originality of the title, the brilliance of its emotion,

& use of language

• published Treatise on vulgar Errors in 1646

– equally unique and read with interest as the 1st book

John Milton

• born Dec. 9th, 1608 in London

• famous for his epic poem, Paradise Lost (1677)

• influential, rhetoric style and the fluency of his poetry impacted the 18th century writing enormously

• admitted to Christ College on Feb. 12, 1625

• worked hard to further his studies beyond school

• learned many languages including Latin, Greek, Hebrew,

Italian, & French

• studies history & culture by traveling through various countries

• focused his study on writing upon his return to England

• his blindness, later, helped him become a better writer

• died Nov. 1674

Works

• "On Shakespeare" published in 1632

• before 1644, he published the following works:

• Of Reformation,

• The Reason for Church Government,

• Of Prelatical Episcopacy,

• Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce

• Defensio pro populo Anglicano (Feb. 24, 1651)

– "defense of the English people," published to justify the actions taken by the English

• Paradise Lost (1677)

– Considered one of the greatest epic poem ever written in English

Aemilia Lanyer

• born in 1569

• brother and sister died during childhood

• parents died when she was young- lived with

Susan Bertie Wingfield

• supported herself by running a school after her the death of her husband

• 1635 - appears in court to receive the profit from her husband's patent - unknown if she succeeded

Works

• Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum

(Hail, God, the king of the

Jews) published in 1611

– was a collection of her poems, all in iambic pentameter (type of meter used in poetry/drama to describe a particular rhythm)

– was extreme in theology and politics

– very pro-feminine - argued for equal social and political rights for women

– argument supported in her poems
