Chapter 1 PowerPoint questions:
1. Explain the parts of an information system. What part do people play in this system?
 Answer: An information system is a combination of people, procedures , software ,
hardware , data , and the Internet. People or also called “End Users” are the most
important part of an information system. Our lives are touched everyday by computersmany times the contact is direct and obvious, such as creating documents using a word
processing program or when connecting to the Internet. Other times, it isn’t as obvious
and is much more indirect as shown in a couple of the pictures.
2. What is system software? What kinds of programs are included in system software?
 Answer: Software is another name for programs in most cases these terms are
interchangeable. Programs are instructions that tell the computer how to process data into
the form you want. The two major kinds of software are System and Application.
 A collection of System software programs are: Operating System, Utilities and device
drives.
 Operation System meaning: Provides an interaction between the user and the computer
and also runs applications. The Best known Operating System is Windows. For example,
Windows 7, Windows 8.
3. Define and compare general-purpose applications, specialized, applications and apps.
Describe some different types of general-purpose applications. Describe some types of
specialized applications.
 There are 3 types of Application Software, which are: General Purpose
Application, Specialized Application, and Mobile Apps.
 General Purpose Application means: Applications that everyone uses for example,
Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
 Specialized Application means: A much narrow focus on specific disciplines and
occupations, such as graphics and Web authoring.
 Mobile Apps: designed for mobile devices or tablets for social networking,
games, music, and video.
4. Describe the different types of computers. What is the most common type? What are
the types of personal computers?
 There are four types of computers: Super Computers meaning: The most
powerful; special high-capacity computers used in very large corporations.
 Mainframe Computer meaning: are capable of great processing speed and data
storage; occupy specially wired, air-conditioned rooms; insurance companies use
to process information about millions of policyholders.
 Midrange computers meaning: known as servers (key term), are computers with
processing capabilities less powerful than a mainframe computer yet more
powerful than a personal computer. Today they are used to support or serve end
users for specific needs such a retrieving data from a database or supplying access
to application software.
 Personal Computers: least powerful but most widely used and fastest-growing
type of computers. There are four (4) types of pcs. Which are Desktop, Laptop,
Tablets and Handheld/Smartphones.
5. What is connectivity? What are wireless devices and the wireless revolution? What is a
computer network? What are the Internet and the Web? What is cloud computing?
 Connectivity means: is the capability of your personal computer to share
information with other computers
 Wireless devices are like tables and smartphones. The Wireless Revolution and
cloud computing promise the potential to dramatically affect the entire computer
industry and how you interact with computer.
 Computer Network: Are computers connected by a communication system like
modems. The largest Network is the Internet.
 Internet and the Web: Basically browses the Web, communicates with others, and
locate Information, etc.
 Cloud Computing: Uses the Internet and the Web to shift many computer
activities from a user’s computer to computers on the Internet.
