TRAVEL DATES: Friday, January 8 - Tuesday, January 12


Please check the Roster section of this document to see if your phone
number is correct.
IMPORTANT TRAVEL NOTES
a. Bring a government-issued photo ID: Driver’s License or passport
b. Bring one carry-on suitcase (or other bag/packpack). We will not check
luggage with the airline, but will carry it on to the airplane, to save time
when we de-plane and to prevent lost luggage. Do not bring more than
this one main piece of luggage. You may also bring a personal item to be
carried on, such as a purse or book bag. Carry-on luggage size limits and
rules at Delta.com: www.delta.com
c. Airport security (TSA) will not allow you to carry liquids or gels onto the
plane, with the exception of small quantities which are placed in a quart
zip lock plastic bag, ready for display to the security agents. The
guidelines maybe updated frequently; please consult the rules at:
www.tsa.gov
ACCOMMODATION: MiHostel
a. Details at Hostelbookers.com and MiHostel.com
b. Hostel will provide you with a towel and bed linen.
c. Shared bathroom, probably in the hall, not attached to room. Plan ahead.
d. Locker storage available. Bring your own locks. Lockers are just big
enough to hold a laptop. I don’t recommend bringing a computer, though.
e. Hostel accommodations will be in two rooms: one for the men with 4 beds
(there may be another guest in there not from our group); one room of
11 beds for the women (all Centre students in there).
f. Your instructor will be staying nearby at The Carlton Hotel, 88 Madison
Avenue. Hotel Phone is 212 532 4100, but I recommend calling or texting
my cell phone (see top of page).
WHAT TO PACK
a. Appropriate winter clothing: Check the weather in advance. NY can be
very cold, and we will be walking outside more than you do in Danville.
b. Comfortable walking shoes. You will walk and stand a lot! I take two
pairs and switch between them daily to avoid tired feet.
c. You will carry your sketchbook around the city and into galleries
everyday; please find a way to do so (with 2 pencils, eraser, sharpener).
A small pencil box is a good idea to prevent breakage.
MONEY
a. Museum admission fees will be paid by Centre; Prof. Tapley will do this for
the group upon entering.
b. Subway & Bus fares: Each student will receive a $27 Metrocard unlimited
7-day pass. The cost is already paid from your class fee. Don’t lose it!
Replacement cost will be your responsibility.
c. Food: You will have to pay for food from your own pocket. Total food
costs are estimated at $200 for the trip. It may be possible to reduce
that cost by brown-bagging it, or eating in your room. The hostel has
community refrigerators in which you may store food (label it!). It won’t
be hard to spend more than that if you like to eat. We will have one group
dinner together on Monday night. I will negotiate with the restaurant to
get a reasonable per person cost—more on that later.

GENERAL INFO

Free Performances: check out this article in the NY Times: "Attractions
for the City That Never Spends"
UNION SQUARE NEIGHBORHOOD – near MiHostel

The City Bakery 3 W. 18th St., between Fifth and Sixth Aves. Lots of
places easy to drop into around Union Square; just explore.
CHELSEA NEIGHBORHOOD

The Chelsea Garment District is a district of Manhattan in New York,
situated on the West Side in the southern part of the Midtown area;
broadly, from 14th up to 34th Streets and west of Sixth Avenue. Full of
art galleries, theatres, restaurants.
o
It is a popular dining and nightlife area and, particularly on 8th
Avenue, the center of gay social life in Manhattan. Of interest to
practically everyone are the Chelsea Piers, located on the Hudson,
a huge sports and entertainment complex that opened in 1995.
Chelsea's explosive growth began in the 1990s and continues
today, with new towers expanding the neighborhood almost as far
north as Madison Square Garden, the famous sports arena located
on the site of old Pennsylvania Station, and today home to the
NBA's Knicks and NHL's Rangers. West of Madison Square Garden
is a grubby commercial and industrial zone.
o
The mid-20s between 10th and 11th Avs. (for example, 25th St.) is
the new hot art gallery area. Walk around and see the shows that
are up. Check gallery schedules and shows here.

Eating in Chelsea
o
Chelsea Market – Food & Shopping. #75 Ninth Avenue (Between
15th and 16th Streets, New York, NY 10011. This is a nice
neighborhood mall that has good places to eat at several price
points including coffee shops, bakeries, Thai food, and a lobster
restaurant. Has free wireless Internet access throughout.
o
Cafeteria -- a misnomer, it's a hip restaurant -- a few blocks south
on 7th for a broad range of stuff, nicely presented, with sidewalk
dining.
o
Grand Sichuan Chelsea, 9th Av. and 24 St. Excellent Sichuan
cuisine, for those who like it hot. Stick with the Sichuan and Hunan
menus and special menus like the Prodigal Daughter's menu. Do
not get "lunch specials" or order from the American-Chinese or
Cantonese menus, and do not get Shanghainese "Soup Dumplings"
(xiaolong bao) unless you want typical American-Chinese takeout
food and dishes made better elsewhere. Get reservations if you are
going during peak dinner hours on any day; this location is really
popular, and you may have to wait a long time for a table if you
just show up.
o
Pepe Giallo, 10th Av. between 24th and 25th Sts. Reliable place for
panini and pasta, priced fairly.
o
Whole Foods Market on 24th St., and numerous delis, bagel places
etc. within four blocks. Nicer, edgy restaurants too.

