The Problem Statement
How caffeine affects blood pressure and the heart rate?
Hypothesis
If caffeine is consumed in large amounts it will increase the blood pressure.
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment is to determine if caffeine affects the blood pressure of
7th grade students.
We became interested in this project because we want to know how and why having
high blood pressure affects many body functions. We also want to know why having
high blood pressure is a heart problem.
We want the people to realize that caffeine in large quantities can give you problems in
the body, in terms of physical condition, and / or certain heart problems, respiratory, and
high blood pressure.
Materials
1 Sphygmomano meter, an instrument that measures blood pressure, using an
inflatable blood pressure cuff & gauge
3 Students (7th)
4 Cans of Diet Coke
2 Straws
1 Chart
Procedure
1. Make sure all the materials are available. Each student should have eaten some
breakfast. None of them can have consumed any tea, pop, coffee, or other
caffeinated substances.
2. Take each of the students’ blood pressure, record the order.
3. Right after the blood pressure is taken, have each, student, drink a full can, 355
ml. of Diet Coke within 5 minutes.
4. Wait 2–3 min from when each student finishes the Diet Coke, and then take their
blood pressure again, using the same order.
5. Immediately have each drink another 355ml. can of Diet Coke.
6. Again wait another 2–3 min. until testing the blood pressure, in the same order.
7. Record their blood pressure.
8. Calculate each student’s blood pressure change. The change is the difference
between the blood pressure with no caffeine and with 1 can of Diet Coke, and the
difference between no caffeine and two cans of Diet Coke.
Results
The hypothesis was correct we proved that caffeine (DIET COKE) increase blood
pressure.
Analysis
The side effects can start as early as 15-45 min. after entering the body. It will always
have an effect as long as it is in the blood. You can only get a minor affect with 2-7
cups. A bigger effect can happen when you drink 7 or more cups of caffeine.
Pregnant women can only have a birth defect if she drinks 56-87 cups all at once. So if
she drinks 4-28 cups she will not have an effect.
There are ways to decrease effects; one way is to, dilute coffee or tea with milk.
Caffeine can increase your chances of getting heartburn, having heart problems, etc.
If caffeine is consumed 30-60 minutes before going to sleep, it can cause restlessness
and trouble getting to sleep.
Introduction
Our project is the Effect of Caffeine on Blood Pressure. At the beginning of this project
we knew only that caffeine affects a lot of things, but not exactly what. Through reading
we found out what it affects and a lot more. In our project you'll see why ingest caffeine
is not a great idea.
Conclusion
The hypothesis was correct we proved that caffeine (DIET COKE) increase blood
pressure. Don’t drink to much coke because it will increase your heart rate.
