7th Grade Reading Program
Overview: As a 7th grade student in my class, you will be expected
to have a novel with you daily in class and read for a minimum of 20
minutes per day. As you complete each novel, you will complete an
assignment from a list of projects that relate to your reading. You will
be required to complete one of the projects from the list, in addition to an
interactive reading log. You will receive the project list to choose from each
quarter.
This reading program is meant to encourage your independent reading. You will
have the opportunity to choose the novels that you would like to read for the
quarter. In addition to outside reading, we will also be reading novels in class. Be
careful when you select your reading choices. You may not choose any books that
are on the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade lists, have been made into movies, or that you have
previously read. All novels must be approved by the specific due date each
quarter.
All of your work will be handed in to the assigned file folder, and project deadlines
will be given each quarter. It is your responsibility to not procrastinate on your
projects and be aware of due dates. All projects will be worth 50 points, and
quality of work will be graded as well as comprehension of book read.
Since reading helps build vocabulary and improves reading skills, I will provide you
with at least 5-10 minutes of reading every day. This means that you must bring
your novel to class each day. If you need help selecting a book, I will be
happy to help you on your time. You may check out a book from me, but
you must plan your time accordingly and do it on your own time. It is
your responsibility to have a book in class each day!

Book Talk: Create a PowerPoint and present to the class
(presentation should be no longer than 3 minutes). It should
include a character analysis for each character (major &

stating if you liked the book and why. Specific project
expectations and grading rubric will be given.

“Dear Diary”: Students create a diary or journal and write at
least five entries that might have been written by a character
in the book. The entries should share details about the story
that will prove that you read the book.

novel. It must contain all story elements: title, author,
setting, characters, plot, main events, theme of story as well
as pictures and graphics.

book report container and decorate it to convey some of the
major details, elements or themes found in your book. Inside
your container, include 10 questions based on the book, along

of unfamiliar words from the book and 5 important objects
that are connected to the story.
