August 30, 2011 Sample
Dear Jane,
Friendly
I have just finished reading a novella by Sandra Cisneros entitled
Letter
The House on Mango Street. The story takes place in a Latino
223 Normal Town Road Greenwood, SC 29649
neighborhood in Chicago. The time period is never mentioned.
Figurative language and imagery are used by Cisneros to enhance this
setting .
I found it amazing how she uses figurative language to enhance
the setting. With great detail, she describes the inside of a neighbor’s
house, so that something so ordinary becomes a beautiful. She writes,
“She likes looking at the walls, how neatly their corners meet, the
linoleum roses on the floor, the ceiling smooth as wedding cake (102).
Cisneros also uses imagery to enhance the setting. In describing a
garden, she writes, “There were sunflowers big as flowers on Mars and
thick cockscombs bleeding the deep red fringe of theater curtains (94).
This garden is rich, and I can see it when I read about it.
If you are looking for a good novella to read, one with an
especially interesting setting, try Cisneros’s story The House on Mango
Street . You just might like it!
All the Best,
Amy
