Fall Break Proposal S.09-05 Title of Bill: Fall Break Proposal Legislative Session: 63rd Session Bill №: S.09-05 Introduction Date: Monday, August 24, 2009 Sponsor(s): Student Body President OBER, Student Body Vice President MARTIN Summary of Purpose: AN ACT TO INSTITUTE A RECESS DURING THE FALL SEMESTER CONSISTING OF TWO DAYS IN MID-OCTOBER WHEREAS, the current break in the Fall semester is the three-day Thanksgiving Recess in late November in addition to Labor Day; and, 2 WHEREAS, Purdue University - West Lafayette schedules an annual Fall break after the eighth week of the Fall semester; and, 3 WHEREAS, data from the Purdue University Calumet Counseling Center shows an increase in the number of students seeking help in the weeks preceding midterm exams; and, 4 WHEREAS, data from the Office of the Registrar shows an increase in the number of students withdrawing from courses during the weeks preceding midterm exams; and, 5 WHEREAS, Purdue University Calumet is the only campus in the Purdue University network that does not offer a Fall break to it's students, faculty and staff; and, 6 WHEREAS, the Purdue University Calumet Faculty Senate is responsible for setting the academic calendar for each academic year; now, therefore be it, 7 ENACTED, that the Purdue University Calumet Faculty Senate amend the 2010-2011 Academic Calendar to reflect the following changes which shall be instituted thenceforth in the Academic Calendar; 8 ARTICLE 1. Fall Semester 9 §1.1 The first day of classes of the fall semester shall be the Monday falling between August 20 and August 26, inclusive, 10 §1.2 Labor Day shall be a holiday. Classes shall be suspended starting at 4:30 PM on the Friday preceding Labor Day and resume on the Tuesday following Labor Day. 11 §1.3 There shall be a two-day suspension of regular classes consisting of the Monday and Tuesday after the mid-point between the beginning of the semester and Thanksgiving break. 12 §1.4 Thanksgiving recess shall consist of Thanksgiving Day, the preceding Wednesday, and the following Friday and weekend. 1 On this, the _____ day of __________, 2016 we hereunto set our hands in affirmation of the adoption of S.09-05 henceforth referred to as the Fall Break Proposal by the Student Senate of Purdue University Calumet and hereby submit this legislation to the Student Body President for signature.
