The Dual & Concurrent Enrollment Program I. Instructors , Sharyland High School staff or STC/UTPA staff: For most of the college classes that will be mentioned whether it is dual or concurrent, the student will be working solely with the college instructors. Most classes ,with the exception of Pre-Calculus-College Algebra, Biology and the CTE courses, classes alternate and are held every-other day. STC/UTPA instructors do not receive Sharyland High School staff emails notifying them on student participation in extracurricular activities. It is the student’s responsibility to notify staff in advance of such an absence. II. GPA, College or High School: All grades will be posted on college transcript and will affect student’s college GPA status. How the college GPA transfers to other 2 and 4 year institutions will depend on the policies of those institutions. Contact the individual institutions for further questions. On-campus dual classes (with the exception of Art Appreciation, Biology (optional), Fundamentals of Criminal Law, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, and the Career and Technology courses) will be calculated in the high school GPA. Off-Campus courses are NOT calculated in high school GPA. III. Grades: In a college class taught solely by an STC instructor, the instructor will only discuss grades with the student. For eligibility purposes and for posting of credits, instructors facilitate with reporting a progress check at the 3, 6 and 9 week periods. It will be the student’s responsibility to communicate with parents details on grades through the use of an individualized Blackboard Account established by STC/UTPA. It will be the student’s responsibility to communicate with instructors for questions or concerns about the class, assignments, grades, tests, etc. Instructors may vary from one period to another in the same subject area. Once enrolled, a student can not be moving from one instructor to another, as their syllabus and course requirements may differ as do the sections that they have been enrolled in. IV. Transfer of Credits: The transfer of college courses from one institution to another have a high success rate, however, it is advised that each student contact college of choice to verify how the credits will transfer. Each university, public or private, in-state or out-of-state, have their own policies for dual enrollment hours. Understand that earning EXCESS college hours while in high school will naturally advance the student when entering in college placing the student in upper level advanced coursework. Also, it is recommended that students consult with perspective college advisors in order to avoid being charged unnecessary tuition, fees and penalties for taking EXCESS college hours outside of their degree plan. V. Eligibility, NO PASS, NO PLAY: With college courses, assignments will be limited but will be weighted greatly. Be aware of the grading periods as a failing grade could lead to ineligibility to compete in extracurricular events. Dual enrollment classes are subject to “Eligibility Waivers” as set by the State Legislation and SISD Board of Trustees. Specific grades are required at specific grading periods to qualify for waivers. It is the student’s responsibility to pick-up, complete and turn in form to principal’s office by set deadline for consideration. See your sponsor or counselor as needed. VI. Withdrawing or dropping: Once enrolled as of STC/UTPA’s census day (12th class day), tuition (exception: Career and Technology courses) must be paid to Sharyland High School Counseling office (see specific details for dual and concurrent). In the case of dropping a college course after census day, payment of tuition will still be owed and the proper DROP WITHDRAWAL form will need to be filled out in the high school counseling office by the student. Failure to do this will result in an “F” recorded on college transcript. Be aware that withdrawals and a low college GPA could affect financial aid, scholarship possibilities and future employment opportunities. Advanced Placement (AP) Program I. Choose AP: Are you ready for a unique learning experience that will help you succeed in college? Through AP's college-level courses and exams, students can earn college credit and advanced placement, stand out in the admission process, and learn from some of the most skilled, dedicated, and inspiring teachers in the world. II. Instructors: Sharyland High School staff approved by College Board to teach Advanced Placement curriculum III. A Different Kind of Class: From the moment you enter an AP classroom, you'll notice the difference—in the teacher's approach to the subject, in the attitude of your classmates, in the way you start to think. In AP classrooms, the focus is not on memorizing facts and figures. Instead you'll engage in intense discussions, solve problems collaboratively, and learn to write clearly and persuasively. IV. Find Your Passion: With many courses to choose from, you'll be able to explore your interests and discover new passions. In AP classes, you'll study fascinating topics and ideas that just might become the foundation of your future college major or career. Throughout the nation, there are 33 AP courses to choose from, including Chinese Language and Culture, Environmental Science, and Psychology. SHS offers 17 AP courses. V. Prepare to Succeed in College: AP courses can help you acquire the skills and habits you'll need to be successful in college. You'll improve your writing skills, sharpen your problem-solving abilities, and develop time management skills, discipline, and study habits. VI. Earn College Credit and Placement: More than 90 percent of four-year colleges in the United States and colleges in more than 60 other countries give students credit, advanced placement or both on the basis of AP Exam scores. By entering college with AP credits, you'll have the time to move into upper level courses, pursue a double-major or study abroad. VII. How Do I Enroll? Once you've decided to take the AP challenge it's easy to enroll. Talk to an AP teacher or the AP Coordinator at your school about the course you want to take. Discuss the course's workload, summer assignments and any preparation you might need. VIII. Sharyland High School Exit Criteria: In the 90 minute AP classes , a student may request to drop an AP class and move into a CP level equivalent course within the first 3 weeks of a nine week period only. In the 50 minute AP classes, a student may request to drop within the first 6 weeks of an eighteen week semester. Requesting to drop an AP course requires parental permission.
