______________________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release April 23, 2012 Four Area High School Students Awarded as Kenneth L. Howard Scholars Columbus, OH -- The Columbus Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated is pleased to announce this year's annual Kenneth L. Howard Scholarship award winners. In the high school division the four $1,000.00 recipients for the 2012 academic year are: 1.) Bob S. Turay Jr., Northland High School; 2.) La Fred Gibbons, East High School; 3.) Arthur Thomas, Beechcroft High School and 4.) Derrick Jones, Eastmoor Academy High School. This is the first time in over 13 years that all of the high school scholarship recipients have been students from the Columbus City Schools. Last year, only one awardee attended a city high school. All awardees will be honored and acknowledged at the annual Kenneth L. Howard scholarship brunch that will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 in the Cardinal Health Ballroom of the Lincoln Theater. The brunch starts promptly at 11:00 a.m. Attorney Larry James will provide the keynote address. This year's awards bring the total for all scholarships given to area high school and college students by the KLHESF and CKF to $100,000.00 since 1987. Scholarship Awardee Profiles Bob S. Turay Jr., has applied to Morehouse College, Georgia Tech and Purdue Univeristy. He plans on attending Morehouse College and majoring in engineering. 1461 Mt. Bob has earned a 4.154 accumulative grade point average and scored a 25 on the ACT exam. He will graduate from high school while concurrently earning an associate’s degree in Web Graphic Design at Devry University. Bob has made the Dean’s list multiple times at Devry. Mr. Turay is not only a scholar, but a well-rounded young man. Bob was a two time All City varsity football player, the varsity football team captain, the STEM club vice president, a member of the high school’s first robotics team, and a NSBE Try-Math-A-Lon team captain. Making his accomplishments even more eye-popping is the fact that Mr. Turay still has manged to work a job as a crew member for a local Tim Horton’s restaurant since December 2011. La’Fred Gibbons has applied and been accepted to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the University of Toledo, Indiana Tech and Tuskegee University. Mr. Gibbons will attend Tuskegee University. LaFred is the oldest sibling of five and will be a first generation college student this Fall. As a transplant to Columbus, Fred was able to excell and has maintained a strong academic rigor in challenging offerings through the school district’s post secondary educational options program. LaFred has taken English classes at Hocking Tech, Kaplan American History, and AP Calculus. He has earned a 3.934 accumulative grade point average, was a member of the National Honor Society and scored a 19 on the ACT. Mr. Gibbons took full advantage of a wide array of extracurricular and interscholastic opportunities while in high school. He is a four year football player and was a captain on the CKF, pg. 3 varsity football team, a S.T.E.M. club member, a wrestler (and captain) and track athlete. He was also a participant on the high school’s mock trial program. His community service included arranging a blood drive for the American Red Cross at his high school in addition to working with the recycling (Going Green) club. Arthur Thomas is currently ranked as number one in his graduating class at Beechcroft High. He has applied to the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University and Northwestern University. He will attend the University of Pennsylvania and will major in engineering. Described as a “rare phenomenon” by his English teacher Antonia Mulvihill, Mr. Thomas has earned a 4.085 accumulative grade point average for 24.5 total credits. He scored a 29 on the national ACT exam. While in high school Mr. Thomas took several AP classes, was a member of the National Honor Society, served as a mentor for the freshman fusion project, was a teacher assistant, and was a lettering member of the varsity basketball team. Derrick Jones has applied to The Ohio State University, the University of Kentucky, and West Virginia University. He will attend Ohio State and will major in electrical engineering. CKF, pg. 4 Academically, Mr. Jones maintained a 3.787 while taking both regular and advanced placement classes and he scored an 18 on the ACT. Derrick has amassed 23.5 credits at the halfway point of his senior year when only 21 are needed to graduate from most public high schools. While at Eastmoor Academy, Mr. Jones was a four year member of the varsity Warrior football team and a member of the varsity track team. He was a member of the Gentleman’s Club, Jazz Ensemble, and the EA Impact team.
