The Williamsport Area School District recognizes the importance and inter-connected relationship between student
achievement and professional development. Through this goal setting process, educators will identify specific student
learning objectives AND the needed professional development to improve instructional practices that will support this
achievement.
 Step 1: Student Learning Objectives (SLO) are goals to document a measure of educator effectiveness based on
student achievement of content standards. SLOs are a part of Pennsylvania’s multiple-measure, comprehensive
system of Education Effectiveness authorized by Act 82 (HB 1901).
 Step 2: Differentiated Supervision provides a framework for professional growth designed to improve teacher
effectiveness, instructional practices, and student achievement. ALL teachers are required to adopt a professional
learning goal in Step 2.
Step I-SLO: The first step in the goal setting process is to identify a student learning objective that is standards-based,
aligns to the achievement goals of the school and/or district, is measurable, and establishes performance targets.
Before choosing a SLO, educators should review the bank of SLO’s published by grade levels and subject areas. Then, adopt
an existing SLO, request a modification, or request from their supervisor the opportunity to develop a SLO to specifically
meet a student achievement measure more specific to their content area. Please remember: A SLO is based on students, needs
to be standards-based, have clearly defined assessment(s), be measurable, and have delineated student performance
goals/targets. * attach SLO Template to this form. Non-teaching professionals and preapproved special education teachers
are not required to complete a SLO.
Step 2- Differentiated Supervision Goal: Discuss with your supervisor the instructional practices and professional
development needed to implement and accomplish the student learning objective goal and/or a chosen professional growth
goal. Review the Differentiated Supervision options below, choose an option, and write a professional growth goal related to
a professional growth area of interest or the chosen SLO. Check an option below.
