Colombia refused to agree to US terms for digging
through its territory
TR supported a revolt in Panama in order to acquire
the land
The rebellion succeeded and the new government
signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903,
granting control of the land to the US
The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe
Doctrine
Latin American countries were falling behind in debt
repayments to European powers. In 1904, instead
of letting Europeans intervene, Roosevelt declared
that the US would intervene instead.

in Mexico in 1914, later blockading, and then
occupying, the port of Vera Cruz
