Last season, third baseman Sean Buckley was selected to the Pioneer League All-Star Team - batting .289 and finishing tied for third in the league with 14 home runs. Ace left-hander Tony Cingrani paced the Billings pitching staff with 80 strikeouts, ranking him 4th in PBL play, with an impressive 13.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio and an average of 14 strikeouts per 9 innings. First baseman Robert Maddox was the Mustangs primary source of power, posting team bests with 16 HR and 51 RBI to go with a .282 batting average in 63 games. The move from Casper, WY (Rockies/Ghosts) was made official in October of 2011. During their eleven seasons in Casper, the organization developed over 40 players who would later play in a major league game. Casper produced four Pioneer League Pitchers of the year since their first season in 2001 (Samuel Deduno-2004, Brandon Hynick-2006, Chris Balcom-Miller-2009, and Albert Campos-2010). Casper‘s Ryan Shealy won the Pioneer League MVP Award in 2002. The Grand Junction Rockies will be managed by longtime organization coach Tony Diaz. Diaz coached in Casper during the entire eleven year history of the ball-club (hitting coach from 2001-2006). Tony Diaz took over as manager for Casper in 2007 after veteran skipper P.J. Carey left the Colorado organization. The Grand Junction Rockies begin a new era in a very rich baseball tradition filled area. The NJCAA World Series has been a staple of the western slope of Colorado (Grand Junction) since 1958 and Colorado Mesa University has one of the most respected NCAA Division II baseball programs in the country. Suplizio Field, the official baseball home for the NJCAA World Series, CMU and the Grand Junction Rockies, has recently under gone an 8.3 million dollar renovation which has guaranteed the City of Grand Junction the NJCAA World Series and Grand Junction Rockies baseball for many years to come. In 2011, the Voyagers won their 13th pennant as champions of the Pioneer League. Ace pitcher Blair Walters led the way and was named Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year and a member the PBL All Star Team. The Voyagers’ home, Centene Stadium, was built in 1940 in the classic “jewel box” style. New renovations have given the ballpark modern amenities while maintaining the vintage historical charm. 2012 marks the 10 th season the Voyagers have been proud members of the Chicago White Sox farm system. In the past, the Voyagers have also been affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. For over 60 years, the Voyagers have been owned by a group of community business leaders and local baseball enthusiasts. Baseball legends like Pedro Martinez, Bobby Cox, and hall-of-famers Joe Tinker and Joe “Iron Man” McGinnity spent days of their playing career in Great Falls. In fact, an Idaho Falls club belonged to the short-lived Utah-Idaho League between the years of 1926-1928. It wasn’t until 1940 that the Idaho Russets joined the relatively new Pioneer League. The Russets replaced one of the inaugural teams of the Pioneer League, the Lewiston Indians. Two years later, play was suspended for just about all of Minor League Baseball for World War II. Baseball officially started again in 1946. In 1955, the Idaho Falls Russets became a “Farm Club” for the first time; no longer being locally owned. An invention from baseball’s infamous Branch Rickey, the farm system would allow Major League teams to partially own, or support financially, several minor league teams. In return, those minor league teams would develop and train players for that particular Major League club. Idaho Falls became a “farm club” for the Detroit Tigers, which whom they would remain with until 1959. Highland Park was the home of Professional Baseball in Idaho Falls until 1975, when fire damage completely destroyed the main grandstand. Rebuilding at the same location, McDermott Field was built and ready for the start of the 1976 season. Between Highland Park and McDermott Field, the longest continual member of the Pioneer League has belonged to the city of Idaho Falls. After many years of name changes due to different Major League affiliations, the Idaho Falls Padres became the Idaho Falls Chukars in 2004. In that same year, the Chukars also became the new proud affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Two years later, the Chukars would play their last season at McDermott Field. On Monday, October 30th of 2006, a ceremonial groundbreaking took place to honor McDermott Field, and to break ground for Idaho Falls’ new ballpark, Melaleuca Field.
