In 1678, early settlers in Carolina Colony start Culpeper’s Rebellion because they don’t like trade laws requiring them to trade only with England. In 1712, the Carolina Colony is split into north and south sections because there was a need for a more effective government in the north. In 1711, the Tuscarora Indians fought and killed European settlers for almost a year because they were upset about being cheated out of their land. In 1740, the first Highland Scots came from Scotland to North Carolina to escape the problems back home. By the 1760s, the Great Wagon Road carried more traffic than any other colonial road and went right by Mint Hill area; this encouraged settlement in the area. In the 1750s, there were many tobacco farms in North Carolina that sold their crops for cash. By 1768, North Carolina sold England more than 60 percent of their naval stores, that is, items made out of trees to be used on ships, making it an important industry to the colony. In 1768, pioneers in western North Carolina rebelled against new taxes in the Regulator movement by rioting and demanding changes. In 1771, the Battle of Alamance was fought between the Regulators and Governor Tryon in which the movement ended in the Regulator’s defeat.
