• Began as a colony under the rule of Oliver Cromwell

• Was taken over by Charles II, and labeled as a restoration Colony.

• Eventually split and part of the land was given to 8 lords.

• In 1719, after separation, S.C became a royal colony

• S.C- government known for religious freedom

• Wife- Married woman looses all legal identity

• Slaves- In N. Carolina slaves were expected to be treated good, and only to work 14-15 hours a day
