I am so happy that you are considering trying out for Hillcrest Cheerleading. Unfortunately, there are many things that go along with being a cheerleader that people do not consider before they try out. I want you to be aware of all of the commitments before you try out. The bullet points below have important information to consider. Our season is very long! The season begins in April 2015 and goes until March 2016. During the summer, we practice three days a week from 1:30-3:30. These practices are not optional! If you miss more than three summer practices, you will no longer be on the team. During the school year, we practice four days during the week from 3:30-5:30. We will also have Saturday morning practices once we begin preparing for competition. We compete in 5-6 competitions during the months of December and January. These competitions take place ALL DAY on either Saturday or Sunday. Cheerleading is a very expensive sport. For a new cheerleader, you will pay approximately $515 and for a cheerleader who has previously been on the team you will pay $365. Fundraising is MANDATORY! We do many fundraisers during the year to help pay for choreographers, tumbling, and other items the cheerleaders may need. If you do not do a fundraiser, you are still REQUIRED to pay the amount of the fundraiser. Ex: Each carwash you must sell 8 tickets at $5, if you do not sell the tickets, you still need to pay $40. Cheerleading Camp: Camps are a great way to get the girls ready for the upcoming season. We will have a MANDATORY cheerleading camp June 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th. Tips for preparing for try outs for Hillcrest High School Cheerleading Following is a list of things that can effect if you make a team and/or which team you make. Practice and practice perfectly. The only way to improve your ability is through lots of practice. Practice your motions, your cheers, and your jumps and don't forget to practice your facial expressions. Practice in front of a mirror or in front of other people. Strive to make your techniques perfect. Mentally visualize yourself executing everything perfectly. Practice your jumps every day until try outs (and after) – technique and height! Work on your flexibility – even if you are not a flyer, flexibility will help in all aspects of cheerleading. During clinics and your try out Get plenty of sleep the night before. Be confident. If you've practiced and worked hard up to this point, then you should be ready. Believe in yourself. Keep your hair away from your face. Don't wear jewelry. Don't chew gum. Take slow, deep breaths to calm and relax yourself. Drink plenty of water. Have a good attitude. Help others. Don't play around with your friends or talk too much. Smile. Smile. Smile. Be peppy and energetic. Show your enthusiasm. Use facial expressions. Look up. Never look down or at the floor. Make eye contact with the judges. Make your motions sharp and snappy. (tight – placement of motions – don’t bring it there put it there) Don't sing your cheers. Use a loud, clear voice. Be careful not to rush them. Take your time. Point your toes in jumps and tumbling. Land with your feet together in jumps. If you make a mistake, go on. Don't stop and stress over it. Use the opportunity to show you can recover from a mistake. Have fun and let it show. Hillcrest High School * Cheerleading Tryouts Tues. April 21, Wed. April 22 & Thurs.
