THE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Sports-of-the-mind teams. The builders watched balsa-wood bridges snap and robotic arms whirl. The
studiers attacked Dynamic Planet and Disease Detective questions. Last Saturday, RAHS hosted the
Science Olympiad Invitational, and our builders and studiers tangled with 25 other teams across 22
separate events. The notable finishes of our Olympians appear in the New Announcements section—
congratulations to the top finishers!
Against the backdrop of the Science Olympiad Invitational, the Skunkworks Robotics team toiled
feverishly in order to meet the February 22 deadline known as “bag day.” The Skunks see their first
competition in four weeks, and the team is poised for another remarkable season.
While our Flaming Penguins were enjoying a weekend away from competition, they continue their
nonstop efforts to qualify as many Speech and Debate team members for state. They are on pace for
a record-setting year, and I wish them the best as they march onward through the state-qualifying
tournaments.
Please join me in thanking our amazing sports-of-the-mind team coaches: Mr. McComb and
Ms. Weeks, Science Olympiad, Mr. Steele, and Mr. Bowlin, Skunkworks Robotics, and Mr. Shiroma
and Mr. Doty, Speech and Debate, for their leadership and inspiration. Our coaches and volunteers
make a positive and indelible difference for our school community. Students, please take time to
express your appreciation to your coaches, and cadre of mentors/volunteers for keeping these
rewarding opportunities alive.
As our teams' verve winds up, the construction team for the Aviation Pavilion project is winding down.
From the south-facing windows, you can watch the workers chip away at the few remaining items. The
next phase, moving the 737 and 747 is almost here! Attention student drivers, if you park near the
737 or 747, please note for Monday February 29th, the 737 will be tugged into the Pavilion. The MoF
security department will block off the parking spaces in front of the plane and a large opening on the
northwest corner of the Pavilion on Sunday night. The parking spaces will also be cordoned off on
Saturday March 5th to move the 747. Currently, the Aviation Pavilion project is ahead of schedule. We
are likely to see all the aircraft moved into the Pavilion prior to leaving for the summer. Thank you for
your cooperation as we help the Museum prepare for their Grand Opening.
Finally, I am thrilled to share one more piece of great news. Please join me in congratulating
Joan Aoanan, who learned she received an ActSix Scholarship. The ActSix award is highly
competitive—only four awards were distributed from a pool of 2000 applicants. Joan has essentially
earned a full-ride scholarship to Gonzaga University. Congratulations, Joan!
The Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.
PTSA—for earning their Gold Level Membership Award for 2016.
Izzie Torres and Sameer Romani—for leading Dow Constantine and Dr. Raisbeck on a tour of
RAHS.
Mr. Storer, Ms. Juarez, Ms. Carper, Ms. Dyer, Ms. Jones Gunn, Mr. Kumakura—for serving on
the Prevention and Intervention Staff Leadership Team
Mr. Gudor, Mr. McComb, Mr. Peterson, and Ms. Wilson—for serving on the Recruitment and
Admission Staff Leadership Team
Ms. Ciccone-Cook, Ms. Fitzpatrick, Ms. Olsen, Mr. Shiroma, and Ms. Wombold—for serving
on the Calendar and Communication Staff Leadership Team
Mr. Davolt, Mr. Edgerton, Mr. Hoehne, Mr. Joshi, Mr. Steele, and Ms. Weeks—for serving on
the 10 Year Plan Staff Leadership Team.
I am honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly.

NASA
Rebecca Burghy, President of the Washington State Chapter of Women in Aviation International,
shared the following announcement:
NASA has launched a world-wide challenge to seek concepts and technologies to contribute to a
breakthrough airspace design and concept of operations that will allow the air vehicles of 2035 to safely
and efficiently participate in dense and diverse traffic.
The estimates are that, twenty years from now, 10 million manned and unmanned vehicles may traverse
the U.S. airspace every day. The Ab Initio (clean slate) Design element of the NASA Safe Autonomous
Operations Systems (SASO) Project is asking innovators to cast aside the restraints of current
transportation models and develop concepts and technologies for a clean-slate, revolutionary model for
the airspace of the future.
The top three submissions will receive a cash award from the overall prize pool of $15,000, in addition
to tremendous exposure and support for their design concept.
You may visit the Sky for All challenge page to find out more and to register as an innovator. Entry to
compete is free. Last date for submission is February 26, 2016.

Safety Issues
Lately, more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of the bus zone area. Please do not make Uturns here, but turn around at the west end of the building. Our student drivers with learner permits
need a positive example, and safe passage as they drive in front of the school. Thank you for your
assistance with our effort to keep everyone safe.
Students, for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South. If
the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do not start into the crosswalk. The school busses
cannot take a free right turn while students are in the crosswalk. If a bus is not waiting to make a right
turn, you likely walked up behind a vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot. Thank you
parents and students for helping us with these two safety concerns.
