Federalism definition: a system in which power is
divided between local, state, and federal
governments.

In the United States there are three types of
government:
a. Federal
b. State
c. Local
Federal
1.
This is the form of government that helps run the entire
nation.
2.
There are three branches of this government (we will
discuss this later)

Legislative
Executive
Judicial
Think of it this way:
a.
You are one person but you have different duties as a
brother/sister, son/daughter or uncle/aunt.
State
1.
This is the form of government that helps run each
individual state.
2. 50 states = 50 state governments
3. There are three branches in this government as well:
a. Legislative
b. Executive
c. Judicial
Local
1.
This is the form of government that helps runs cities, towns
or counties inside each state.
2.
This is run by what’s called a municipal government.
3.
Power is given to these municipal governments from the State.
4.
The municipal government helps run services such as:

Fire Department
Parks
City transportation
How Does it Work?
1.
All three types of government work together to best
serve the interests of the United States and their
citizens.
2. It is necessary to have all three types of government
because without it our nation would surely crumble.

4. Even though these leaders do not have absolute
control they are the ones who are in charge of the
different types of government.

The Federal Government is on top of the pyramid and
does have a bit more power over the state and local
governments.

However, if it wasn’t for the state and local government
(the foundation of the pyramid) the federal government
would not be strong.

Think of it this way:
Think of your favorite famous person: celebrity, athlete,
musician, etc.
