Dear Parents,
This has been a wonderful year so far in Spanish! I hope your student has been telling you
all the things they are learning in our class and speaking to you in as much Spanish as
possible.
Shelby County used to mandate national foreign language exams for foreign language
classes, but in recent years it has become optional. As TCAP only tests for the core
subjects, the National Spanish Exam functions as a TCAP of sorts for foreign language
students. I would like each student to take the National Spanish Exam this year.
What is the National Spanish Exam?
The National Spanish Examinations are standards-based assessments that measure both
achievement and proficiency, but measure them separately.
1. The achievement section of the test assesses content standards through specifications
for vocabulary and specifications for grammar.
2. The proficiency section of the test assesses performance standards as defined by the
National Spanish Examination Proficiency Levels. The NSE assesses Interpretive
Communication through both reading comprehension and listening comprehension.
Why should my student take it?
It will not count toward or against their individual grades; the exam is simply a great way
to determine on-level proficiency in the language. The mission of the National Spanish
Examination is to recognize student achievement and to promote language proficiency
in the study of the Spanish. By taking this exam, students will know their Spanish language
proficiency rating and where they rank on a national scale. Students can win prizes and
scholarships based on their high achievement on this exam.
Where will the test take place?
The test will be administered at school during the regular school hours.
How much does it cost?
The cost per student is $4.00, which includes:
One (1) Online National Spanish Examination
Unlimited year long use of the free, online practice exercises and practice
examinations
Seven (7) sets of percentiles for each student
National recognition
Printable certificates for students who earn medal placement
Eligibility to compete for Global Citizen Scholarships, Junior Travel Awards and
Senior Scholarships
If you agree to let your student take this test at the end of the year, please sign and
return with the $4.00 registration fee.
