Write true if the statement is true. If the statement is false, change the underlined words to make the statement true.
1. As a cell’s size increases, its amount of DNA also increases.

For Questions 3-6, complete each statement by writing the correct word or words.
3. Cells carry genetic information in packages of DNA called ___________________

have only one circular strand of DNA.
5. In eukaryotic cells, the genetic structure consists of DNA and a tightly wound protein, which together form a
substance called _______________

The Cell Cycle
Cell growth and division occur in a regular cycle. This cycle is divided into four phases: G1, S, G2, and M.
Follow the directions for coloring in the diagram below. Then use the diagram to answer the questions.
 Color the phase in which most cell growth occurs blue.
 Color the phase in which DNA replication occurs red.
 Color the phase in which preparation for mitosis occurs yellow.
 Color the phase in which mitosis and cytokinesis occur orange.
Mitosis
7. During prophase, when cell chromosomes become visible, what are the duplicated strands of DNA called?
8. What is the name for the area in which these duplicated strands are joined?
9. What structures are spindle fibers attached to that help pull the paired chromosomes apart?
For Questions 10-13, match the description of the event with the phase of mitosis in which it occurs. Each phase may be
used more than once.
A. Prophase
B. Metaphase
C. Anaphase
D. Telophase
10. The chromosomes separate and begin to move to opposite sides of the cell.
11. The chromosomes become visible. The centrioles take up positions on opposite sides of the nucleus.
12. A nuclear envelope re-forms around each cluster of chromosomes. The nucleolus becomes visible in each
daughter nucleus.
13. The chromosomes line up across the center of the cell.
Draw four chromosomes as they go through metaphase, anaphase, telophase. Label each phase and describe what is
happening to the DNA. Be sure to include the centromere, centrioles and spindle fibers.

Cytokinesis
14. What is cytokinesis?
15. How is cytokinesis different in plant cells than in animal cells?
Telophase
