REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND OTHER MATERIALS None COURSE DESCRIPTION The Career Exploration Program is a self-paced, independent study experience for career planning. It will not select a career for you, but it is designed to assist you in making a better informed, more systematic career decision ... whether you are considering a career change, choosing a major, or wanting to find out more about yourself and occupations. The course is individualized to meet each participant’s needs, and appointments are made at your convenience. If you are enrolled in Career Exploration (CARS 1011) your prescribed program must be completed by the last day of the semester as posted on the Academic Calendar. Some of the resources available for Career Planning include: Interest Inventory: The Holland Self-Directed Search is a tool that will aid you in grouping your interests into possible occupational themes to explore. SIGI3: SIGI is a comprehensive, interactive software program that focuses on career decision-making strategies based on work-related values, particularly helpful for the career changer. Career Abilities Placement Survey (CAPS): The CAPS consists of a battery of eight ability assessments. Your results will be profiled into occupational clusters. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): The MBTI was created to help people understand personal differences and appreciate the value of those differences. The MBTI provides information about the work environment fit, a list of career areas, and occupational choices. FOCUS: A computerized guidance system designed especially for the education and career planning of today’s non-traditional, as well as traditional student. Page 2 of 3 Career Planning Folder: As participants progress through their prescribed program they will be assembling a personalized career planning folder. This folder will provide information and be the criteria for successful completion of the course. Job Search Skills: Assistance is available for developing job search skills, including resumes and interviewing. Placement opportunities, both local and national are listed through www.collegecentral.com/TulsaCC/ Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI): This assessment analyzes 10 key study skill areas. Results are interpreted and customized to your needs. Counseling: Members of the Career Services counseling staff guide the participants through the program, interpreting assessment results, assisting with information gathering, providing guidance in decision making and goal setting, and making referrals to other helpful resources. EVALUATION A variety of assignments will be evaluated periodically. Grades are not negotiable. The grade you earn is determined by the quality and persistence of your work. This “course” is graded with Satisfactory (S), Unsatisfactory (U), or Administrative Withdrawal (AW). CARS 1011 may not be taken more than one time for credit. WITHDRAWAL The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Check the TCC Academic Calendar (http://www.tulsacc.edu/programs-and-courses/catalog-2012-2013/academic-calendar-2012-2013) for the deadline that applies to the course(s). If you are contemplating a Withdrawal, ALWAYS begin the process with a discussion with the faculty member assigned to the course; there may be other options open to you. However, if you decide to withdraw, it is your responsibility to contact the Counseling Office to initiate the Withdrawal ('W' grade). You cannot withdraw using TED. Withdrawals, “D” and “F” grades could negatively impact your financial aid (including Tulsa Achieves). Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F”. Additionally, students may receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the financial aid recalculation leaves a balance due to TCC. Non-attendance does NOT constitute an official withdrawal. Do not simply stop attending ANY class! INCLEMENT WEATHER AND CLASS CANCELLATION When severe winter weather hits, you may assume that TCC will be open for classes unless it is announced otherwise on television and radio stations and the TCC website. TCC does not automatically close if Tulsa Public Schools close. Additionally, the College uses TCC Alerts to immediately contact you during a crisis or emergency; delivering important information and notifications on all your devices (e-mail accounts, cell phone, pager, smartphones, PDAs, etc.). When an incident or emergency occurs, authorized senders will instantly notify you using TCC Alerts. TCC Alerts is a free service. Your wireless carrier may charge you a fee to receive messages on your wireless device. Sign-up for TCC Alerts at http://www.tulsacc.edu/about-tcc/tcc-alerts.
